Crime: 17 April 2013

First:  We had three reports yesterday of scam phone calls from someone, purporting to be a police officer.  He says we have an offender in custody, who has fraudulently used your credit cards.  We need the details from your card to tie up the offences.  If you let us have the card number plus the security code number from the back, we will immediately cancel them for you and deal with this matter.  We will also send a taxi round to collect the cards for evidential purposes.

This is a scam, but 3 people fell for it yesterday; one in Wraysbury, one in Old Windsor and another in Windsor.  Two of them handed their cards over, when a car pulled up outside !  Fortunately for the third, they became flustered and did not hand over any details.

I hope they are not members of NHW who read these messages !  The offenders also pulled the ‘phone us back to verify we are the police’ trick – they did not clear the line, so when the poor victims dialled the police number, the offenders just answered the phone again.  Please warn everyone you know.  We don’t do this.  If we collect anything from members of the public – you will find a uniformed Bobby / PCSO on the doorstep !!!

NEXT: I have attached below Mrs Chalmer’s latest handout, the detail is the result of an ‘Intelligence Interview’ just carried out, with a young lad arrested earlier this week.  He has used this technique for the past year.  It is simple and there is no evidence left behind – I may have referred to these burglaries in the past as ‘Unknown means of Entry’ - as there is no evidence of damage / forced entry.  This does have consequences for victims.  Insurance Companies read this as left ‘INSECURE’ and there will be problems collecting on any policy.  The solution is very simple – all UVPC must be double locked using the key – then this can never happen !

Mrs. Chalmers has also produced a handout for when you go away !  I have attached that as well

People from outside the area have moved from Stafferton Way to St Peter’s Avenue Furze Platt.

16/4  Tuesday 2.15 p.m.  Windsor Road.  Burglary.  The property was entered over a rear garden fence causing damage.  The thieves then smashed a pane of glass in the rear door.  The alarm sounded and they did stop for a few minutes to check drawers, but left almost immediately – nothing appears to have been stolen.

THAMES VALLEY POLICE ADVICE RE LOCKING UPVC DOORS:

Mrs. Chalmers latest Handout:

Thames Valley Police are reminding residents to make sure their doors are properly secured after recent incidents of burglaries, where offenders have walked up to front UPVC doors to check if the door handle is locked.

If they have seen any movement, they will use a screwdriver or similar implement to ‘pop’ the door open.

This only works on non double locked doors. The method can be virtually silent and therefore people may not hear anyone enter their property.

The most common cases of opportunist summer burglary involve offenders that:

  • enter an insecure front door while residents are in the back garden
  • enter doors that are closed but unlocked at night while residents are asleep
  • reach through windows to take valuable items

In around 25 percent of break-ins that take place in the spring and summer months, entry is gained through insecure windows and doors, especially at the rear of the property.

  • Ensure that windows and doors are closed and locked when you are out. Don’t leave small windows open believing them to be safe.
  • If you want to leave windows open while you sleep, fit window restrictors so they cannot be fully opened, or make sure they are not large enough to allow access to a burglar.
  • When out in your garden ensure that windows and doors to the front of the house are secure. It only takes a second for someone to get into your home and take things without you noticing.
  • Do not leave valuables on display in front of windows or in reach of open windows or doors.
  • Ensure that all barbecue and garden equipment and tools are securely locked up in a shed and out of sight. Tools can be used by the potential offender to break in to your home.
  • Consider fitting outside security lighting or a visible alarm to help deter burglars. Even using pea shingle or gravel on a driveway and spiky plants in garden beds can help.
  • Don’t leave any keys near entry points where they can be ‘fished’ or ‘hooked’ out through the window, letter box or cat flap.
  • Ensure any internal handle operated locks on UPVC doors are fully secured with a key.
