Crime: 28 May 2013

I have had a request to send out a warning by Superintendant Simon Bowden, our Area Commander.  It relates to an incident in Bracknell, but could easily have happened here and no one has reported it:

RBFRS ISSUES WARNING TO CHILDMINDERS AFTER UNOFFICIAL

FIRE SAFETY INSPECTION

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is warning childminders to be on their guard, after a man visited a childminder’s home in the Bracknell Forest area recently.  He claimed he was there to conduct a fire safety inspection.

The man reportedly turned up unannounced at the lady’s home, inspected the premises and gave her detailed fire safety advice.  Fire Safety, forms part of the childminders’ licensing requirements which are issued and regulated, by the Local Authority.  All Fire Safety Inspections will only ever be carried out by RBFRS, in conjunction with the Local Authority, and not by a third party.

Chris Bunyan, Group Manager for Protection at RBFRS, said: “Firstly, I would like to make it clear that no children were harmed during this visit, nor is there any information to suggest that there was any intention to do so.  However, as it is not clear what this man’s motives were in visiting the childminder’s premises, we have reported it to Thames Valley Police, who are currently investigating.

“I would also like to remind childminders that Fire Safety Inspections are only carried out once an appointment has been made.  A legitimate Fire Officer will never just turn up unannounced.

“In addition, our Fire Safety Inspectors will always present their ID card, which clearly shows their name and photo.  It also has a unique RBFRS identification number.  If you are ever in any doubt as to whether this is authentic or not, please telephone RBFRS on 0118 945 2888, to double check.

“Childminders have to comply with Local Authority licensing requirements, not Fire Safety Legislation applying to commercial premises.  There is therefore no reason, for anyone other than an official Fire and Rescue Service or Local Authority representative, to offer any kind of Fire Safety Advice.”

James William, from Thames Valley Police said: “If you have any information about bogus callers, please contact the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 101.

“If you don't want to speak directly to the police you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.  No personal details are taken, information is not traced nor recorded and you will not go to court.”

24/5 – 28/5  Friday 2 p.m. / Tuesday  10 a.m.  Laxton Green, Cox Green.  Roof of a car dented as someone has jumped on it.

23/5 – 24/5  Thursday 6 p.m. / Friday Midnight.  Winchester Drive, Cox Green.  Garage break – door forced.  Nothing stolen.  A van on the driveway was also searched but nothing stolen.  In this case the owner did not feel it worth reporting to the police, as nothing was stolen.  Please never think this.  A crime has occurred and we need to know.  If nothing else it will show us the route an offender took.  We may have a car broken into in one location and another 2 miles away with nothing to connect them to form a pattern.  A third and fourth offence – even if nothing is taken, ties them all together.  The route alone, may point to a particular offender.  If they are apprehended, when we place them before the courts, the offences will be dealt with more seriously if 10 offences are charged – than 2 !

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

Just a warning.  Many of you may have suffered from the scam virus which takes over your computer, saying your computer has been blocked by the police for illegal downloads.  That one is fairly simple to remove – as long as you have 2 computers – you need one to be unaffected to download the patch !  Someone in the office has now had a German version, which is proving more difficult to remove !
