MORE REPORTS OF THE PHONE DELIVERY SCAM !

Several people have phoned in to say that they have received a delivery of phones.  This is followed by a phone call, to say they have been delivered in error, someone would be along to collect them shortly.

Our advice is to make contact with Fraud Direct – Fraud is no longer a police matter (I have attached full details of how to make contact with them).  If you do get the phone call – say that as you had not ordered the phones, you have dropped them off at your local police station – they can be collected from there !  That ends the matter !

Nottingham Knockers right across the area.  Please – as soon as you close the door from the – if you have opened the door – phone the PEC on the 101 number to report them.  We always go out and speak to them to make sure they are who they say they are and have the proper paperwork – a Pedlars Certificate.  Yesterday the RBWM Community Wardens spoke to a young lad in Cookham, who was abusive to the resident when they refused to buy anything.  All his paperwork – including his ID - was fake and he had a string of convictions for all sorts of offences.  If you see the lad is carrying a large holdall – simply do not answer the door – but phone us anyway.

Another wheel gone from under a car – this time in Ascot:

SUNNINGHILL:

19/5 – 13/6  Armitage Court.  Spare wheel stolen from underneath a Landrover Discovery.  I believe these can cost up to £700 to replace !  While this theft problem is ongoing, I would suggest you keep the spare inside the car, but hidden or at least covered.  As I suggested on Wednesday, if you have a car with a spare on the outside / underneath – please check it is still there.  If it is missing, we need to know so that we can assess the size of this theft problem – which is happening right across the area.

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

I HAVE HAD THIS IN RE PEOPLE GOING DOOR TO DOOR COLLECTING FOR CHARITY

Hi Jeff.

I had two very pleasant young men on my doorstep a couple of days ago, collecting for the Red Cross.  I had no reason to disbelieve their assertion that they were genuine.  Nevertheless, their stated intention was to sign me up for a Direct Debit or Standing Order (not sure which) on my bank account.

I did promise to look at the Red Cross campaign on the internet, but declined to give my bank details and signature to ANYONE just ringing on my door bell.

May I please ask what your views are on this sort of approach?

Best wishes,

John

John did exactly the right thing.  You can explain very politely that even though they carry an ID, you have no idea who they are –– these are really easy to obtain.

You can take any information they have with them and then make your own arrangements re any charitable donation you wish to make.

The advice is always the same  DO NOT hand over bank details to a complete stranger – however well meaning.

It is not easy to do this, but we must all follow the correct procedures.

NEXT NOTTINGHAM KNOCKERS:

This arrived on Wednesday, but I am getting reports from right across RBWM – these are Nottingham Knockers and they must be reported to the police on the 101 number:

Hi Jeff

Wednesday 12th June at 2.10pm I had an unsolicited caller at the door.  He was well spoken, aged about 26.  He had items to sell in a black holdall and said he was on probation.

He was very polite when offers were declined.

Regards

Michael

Can I remind everyone about calling the PEC if they get a Nottingham Knocker – we will go out and speak to them every time !  AND – of course our motto – I do not buy goods and services at the door.  Then politely but firmly close the door and call the police.  No conversation !  You could reveal that neighbours work late, or are away on holiday !
