First can I point you to the section – MEMBERS’ COMMENTS: below.  Someone asked me a question about using PayPal.  I always know the right person to ask – to get the correct answer, not just an ‘I think....’  Greg Nelson the Head of Trading Standards over at the Borough, has been really good and put something together for us, which I hope you will find useful.  You may want to cut and paste it into another document to keep to one side, in case it is needed later.

Can I thank Greg, every time anyone asks for help with a problem, everyone pulls out all the stops to be helpful and I know we are all really grateful ?

RIVERSIDE & BELMONT:

24/6  Monday 8 a.m. / 3.30 p.m.  Barn Close, Furze Platt.  Offenders have entered the property via an alleyway to the rear of the property.  They then tried to force doors and rear windows.  Having failed, they smashed the kitchen window.  Search of whole house.  They ignored jewellery and electrical items and exited via the rear door USING KEYS WHICH HAD BEEN LEFT IN THE DOOR.  American dollars and 2 distinctive collectors coins (2 X 10 Deutsche Mark coins, commemorating Potsdam), stolen

25/6  Tuesday 3.30 a.m.  Waltham Road.  White Waltham.  Garage break – USING A KEY HIDDEN NEAR THE GARAGE – as the garage door was opened the alarm went off and the offender immediately made off.  Two messages here – the advantages of alarming your garage – in this case it was an integral garage – even more important and secondly spare keys MUST NOT be hidden under flowerpots or anything else near a property.  Thieves know we do this and scout around for possible hiding places.  Finally - even though it was a rural location, the thieves made off, as soon as the alarm sounded !

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

If you know anyone that runs a pub / restaurant can you warn them about this scam, which happened in Windsor this week and I understand from our Licensing Officer Debie Piermain, has happened across RBWM:

Jeff

We have just had claims made to us for dry cleaning, which have been paid out at both the Royal Oak and at Bar 51. Both were for £35. They were claimed by a short dark haired girl, who claimed to have had red wine spilled down her jacket.  Authority had been given by the previous manager.

The receipts are identical, both claimed last Monday, one is receipt number 2 and one receipt number 6, so I assume others might have been caught.

Many thanks – others need to be aware.

Regards

George

Re Colour:

Of all the hundreds of replies – for which I am really grateful - I felt Cheryl, put it very well:

Hi Jeff

With regard to colour in the messages.  I like the colour, I have a Smartphone, not an iPhone, and the messages look just fine on my phone.

I would vote to keep the colour, it highlights the message a lot better for reading, particularly on a smaller screen, like a smartphone.

Thanks for the opportunity to feedback on this.

Cheryl

Cheryl’s response begs the question - does this only impact upon iPhones ?  Several people with iPhone 5s emailed me to say they have no problem either and want the colour retained.

I have also had an email in to say the new Jpeg files are a problem.  I will go back to using Word and JPG / PDFs instead.  Who would have thought all this was so complicated ? (only one question mark this time – I have been asked not to use multiple ????? and !!! ) !  Message received.

Hi Jeff

You send out lots of valuable information, often with attachments.  I can open those which are DOC or JPG files open quite happily, but PDF files prove to be inaccessible.  They cause my computer to hang indefinitely, even though I can open PDF files in all other circumstances.  Your bulletin today threatens to convert all attachments to PDF format, which probably means they would all become inaccessible.

I'm at a loss to know where to start looking for any cause to this problem, which seems to be purely NHW related.  Is anyone else having this difficulty?

Malcolm

NEXT:-

Someone asked me about the safety of using Paypal as an online banking system.  This arose because of the car purchasing scam – someone travelling abroad offers to buy your car and says they will pay, using Paypal.  Is this safe – the answer basically is NO.  If there is a problem – in the case of the scam – they cancel the payment.  The main problem is one of Jurisdiction.  If something goes wrong in which country would you sue ???

Greg Nelson the Head of RBWM Trading Standards is putting some advice together – it has just arrived - but in the meantime as this may be urgent for some of you I have had this in from Surrey Trading Standards – we do work cross border which I will add as well.

Hello Jeff

I’ve been looking to put some advice together for people using PayPal. Not surprisingly there’s plenty of advice already out there, so rather than re-invent the wheel I would refer people to http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-scammers-target-your-paypal-account-how-to-never-fall-for-it/  which is pretty comprehensive.

One thing I would add, is that people need to take particular care when using PayPal to buy or sell goods, that are not covered by PayPal’s Buyer Protection, or Seller Protection respectively (see https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-safety-and-security ).

Cars for example, are not covered, so anyone who is a victim of the attempted scam we saw recently (an offer to buy a car using PayPal), would not get their money back from PayPal, if things went wrong.

I hope that helps

Regards

Greg
