Crime: 8 July 2013

As you may know you can register to get Alert messages from other parts of the country and I am registered with Nottingham Police.  This message went out there on Friday.  I could have written it myself – and often do.  This is really important as the hot weather persists:

Help us stop the burglars by locking your doors and windows.

Officers are urging you to get into the habit of locking the door after yourself, even if you are going out again later. Reduce your chances of becoming a victim by making sure thieves can’t get in.

Don’t leave anything on show or in obvious places in your home or your car - this just tempts would-be thieves.

Install outside security lights and burglar alarms and make sure they are switched on.

Make sure that you close your downstairs windows before going to sleep. This is something people often forget to do during the hot summer months.

“If your home or car is insecure it may have an impact on your insurance.

“If you see anyone acting unusually in your area, please call us. Many of these crimes take place overnight and we need people to be vigilant.”

If you have any information call us on 101 or call 999 if you see a crime in progress.

Next several people have reported that their pockets have been picked in Windsor Town Centre over the weekend.

This actually happened:

Two people went into a cafe for coffee.  The coffees were purchased and they had paid and placed their wallet on the tray while they walked back to a table.  As they received their change a coin dropped onto the floor.  As they bent down to pick it up they noticed 2 men and 2 women stranding extremely close – close enough for her to feel uncomfortable.  They were causing a scene confusing everyone including the staff.  The aggrieved then left to sit outside, but was jogged somehow and the coffee was spilled on the tray.  As they were cleaning up the tray the wallet disappeared.  The minute you ‘feel’ something is suspicious – listen to your instincts – they are there to protect you.  Your brain sees and hears things your conscious mind ignores.

Can everyone be aware ?  Large shoulder handbags that seem to protrude several feet behind you – blocking everyone’s way – should always be zipped up !  You also need to know and be aware of who is around you.  As I walk through the town so many people are completely oblivious to their surroundings.  If you are someone who has to keep saying sorry to passers by, because you have inadvertently blocked their path, stopped dead in front of them, wandering aimlessly mind in the clouds, try and be more aware.  If someone has nearly bumped into you because you stopped suddenly, they were too close anyway and you should have known they were in your personal space, they may have had their eyes on your handbag / pockets and the bump was all they needed !!

Re Bike theft  - these happened in Windsor - but could easily have taken place in Maidenhead - lessons to be learned:

Saturday  Edinburgh Gardens, Windsor.  Garage break.  Door jemmied from the frame.  2 bikes, Golf clubs, electric drill and a box of tools stolen.  Details of the bikes are sketchy.  1 – The owner is trying to find a description.  2.  The only details - black bike with some blue writing on the frame.

Sunday 1.15 a.m.  Coach Park, Alma Road, Windsor.  Locked up brand new bike stolen from bike rack in the coach park.  A silver gents Saracen Mantra.  No further details other than it was postcoded.  These details will be available from the shop where it was purchased !

Getting Better:

Saturday 10 p.m. / 11.30 p.m.  High Street, EtonBike stolen from near Eton Bridge.  It was a gents Specialised black Hardrock 26’’ wheel 17’’ frame !  No frame number.

AND...........

Saturday 7.30 a.m.  Eton Court, High Street, Eton.  Bike locked to boat stolen.  A grey gents Specialised Hard Rock Pro – frame number WUD 705072588 – Hurrah !

6/7  Saturday 10.30 a.m. / 2 p.m.  Smith’s Lane.  Bike chained to railings stolen.  As you know we have quite a few bikes stolen in Windsor.  When I read the police reports, most owners know the colour of their bike, some know the make, a few know the model – almost none know the frame number !  It is only with the frame number that the bike can be traced – and even if we recover it, you will have to prove it is yours – and – the only way to do that is with this number.  There will be thousands of ‘blue Raleigh bikes’ – how do you prove which one is yours – and just as importantly, if we recover it from a accused, if we cannot prove it is yours – how can we prove it is stolen in order to get an arrest ?  Please take a moment to find the plate – usually on the bar under the pedals – but it could be anywhere depending upon the manufacturer.  Write it down and then email a full description to yourself, so that it is always available if the bike is stolen – then register it for free on

www.Bikeregister.com

or

www.immobilise.com

If your bike is stolen / lost / mislaid and you do not have the frame number, the bike shop that sold it to you will !  They keep records of every transaction under your name.  Please pass this information ‘where you bought the bike’ to the police, when reporting your bike missing if you do not have the relevant information.
