Another message from the Borough:
Parents
and carers invited to have child car seats checked for free
Parents and
carers will be able to get their children’s car seats checked by the
experts for free at the Magnet Leisure Centre on Friday
16 August.
Royal Borough road safety officers and
accredited experts from Car Seat Safety will be checking child seats and
offering safety advice at the Magnet Leisure
Centre between 10am and 4pm.
As well as checking car seats and offering
advice on buying car seats, officers will be explaining the new i-size
European standard for child seats that was introduced on 9 July.
They will be supported by officers from the Royal
Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
This is a joint operation with Slough
Borough Council which is hosting a similar event at ASDA, Telford
Drive, Cippenham, on Thursday 15 August between 10.30
am and 3.30 pm.
The Borough’s Road Safety Team
offer the following advice:
- don’t
be in a rush to transfer a child up to the next stage of seat
- make sure
you have the right seat for the child’s weight and height
- look
after the seat and it will look after your child – make sure the
harnesses and seatbelts are not twisted
- if the
adult seatbelt is holding the car seat in place, check that it is
routed correctly.
Cllr Geoff Hill, cabinet member for highways
and transport, said: “The Royal Borough is doing all it
can to improve the safety of our children on the roads. This event aims to
raise awareness of the importance of correctly fitting child car seats and
reducing the number of child passenger casualties.
“At the last car seat check event, it was
alarming that nearly half of car seats checked were incorrectly fitted.
“I would encourage parents and carers to
take this opportunity to have their child seats checked over. The checks
are free to all and could help reduce the numbers of children killed or
seriously injured on our roads.”
Imogen Leonard, Royal Borough Road
Safety Officer, said: “All
parents want their children to be safe in the car and we urge everyone who
has a child seat to come along and get it checked or get free advice on
what to look for when buying a car seat. The days are a very good way to
get information to help us target future events – with the ultimate goal
of saving children’s lives.
“Many seats are fitted incorrectly or do
not fit the make and model of the car, are of poor quality, or
counterfeit, all factors which can result in serious injury to a child
during a collision.”
