Crime: 22 August 2013

I spent the whole of yesterday at the Retirement Fair in Ascot.  The event was even better and bigger than last year.  My grateful thanks, to all those that came up and chatted with us.  It really makes my job worthwhile, when I meet friendly faces who have something positive to say.  RBWM Community Warden Ben Page and Comms Officer from the Borough Helen Taylor were also on the stand and they had a really good day too.  Ben’s experience as a former locksmith, was really useful and he was able to advise dozens of people about their security from the viewpoint of a master locksmith – you could not get better practical advice than that.  Our new Windsor Inspector, Emily Roberts was there – with a queue of people to talk to all day.  She really enjoyed it as well – interaction with the public is a huge part of her role – and she is rather good at it !  The Police Cadets also did a sterling job – we always have to remember, the good kids outweigh the bad kids, who unfortunately, get all the publicity.

Some answers to the black borders now around messages:
From John,

Hi Jeff
In my version of Outlook (2003) I can go into Options, Page Colour and change it back to white.

From Shirley, which is virtually the same – which shows exactly how to do it:

Hi Jeff,

Regarding the grey background colour.  if you are using Microsoft Outlook this is how to forward the message.

Click on “Forward” as you normally do and a new window opens
Click on the message (anywhere in the message) as if you were going to type something like your signature
Click on the “Options” tab at the top of the window
Click on “Page Color” (one of the buttons near the top)
Click on “No Color” from the drop down menu (this will change the page colour from grey to white)

You can then finish your message as normal and send it.

Kindest Regards,
Shirley.

I heard the best definition of why of we all do what we do as members of NHW this week.  Often running a scheme is a thankless task and some consider it our duty to look after those who may need help; but that doesn’t explain why most of us put in hours of caring work protecting those less fortunate, or more vulnerable than ourselves – often without thanks.  The word was ‘KINDNESS’.  Often forgotten in the hard bitten, rushed world we live in today.  Can I thank you all, on behalf of those that don’t get to say, or don’t think to say it.  You do a marvellous job.  Thankyou.

An expensive motorbike was stolen recently.  Melita one of our PCSOs in Ascot has obtained a photo.  It is quite distinctive:

Hi jeff

Re cold calls and SPAM emails
Hi Jeff,

I keep getting emails purporting to be from Paypal telling me my account appears to have been compromised.  The emails do not address me by name, I forward them to spoof@paypal.co.uk and am told by Paypal that they were phishing, and I am doing the right thing.

When I get phone calls telling me I have a problem with my computer I tell the caller I don't have a computer !It works.

Ann
Thanks Ann

THE CHINESE SCAM LETTER:
Many of you are still worried by the scam letter from Mr. Tuen Mutu.  You will recognise it by a line of Chinese characters, top right on the letter – and the fact that they are all from Mr. Tuen Mutu or some handed in come from Yang Mutu!!  BIN THEM
Please let all your elderly / vulnerable / friends / relatives / work colleagues / neighbours know.  It will stop them worrying.

This has come in cross border from Surry Police – we are not far from the border with Surrey !  these cars can only be stolen if the driver has the key / fob.

We are suffering from a series of night time burglaries here, where cars are being stolen - predominantly German makes.

Please ensure that you use any fitted security and double check, before you retire to bed. Think:

  • Close all ground floor windows.
  • Double lock front doors, if you have a double glazed front door with dead locking, make sure you lift the handle, lock it and remove the key.
  • Don’t leave car keys lying around downstairs, certainly not in view of the letter box, keys are sometimes ‘fished’ through the letter box.
  • Put your car in your garage if you can.
  • Ensure your car is locked and valuables are removed at night, set the alarm if you have one.
  • Fit PIR lighting to the front of the house so that if an intruder enters the perimeter of your property, the light comes on – burglars don’t like to be seen.
  • Ensure an intruder can’t get easy access to the rear of your property.
  • If you have an alarm system set up a zone to cover the downstairs of your property at night.
  • If you haven’t got an alarm, consider investing in one. The average domestic alarm system should is fairly reasonably priced now and can represent the most cost effective security enhancement to your property.

Thieves are cruising round the area in the early hours of the morning to identify cars to be stolen. If you see ANYTHING suspicious ring in on 101 or 999. If you think something in your neighbourhood isn’t right, it probably isn’t and we need to know.
