First – a SCAM ALERT:
This is a standard old scam, in a new format:

Dear Jeff
I receive the alert through my school mail box and have not read about this scam before, so it may be new?

At 6.40 pm, I answered my landline. It was a man called John Wilson, purporting to be from ‘Verified by Visa’.  He said he could see that my Visa Debit card had just been used to make two payments of £200 to ‘Argos Online’.  He asked if I had my card with me ?  He then asked me to turn the card over and ring the security number on the back.  My bank would then be able to stop the payments going through.
He asked me to hang up and ring the bank IMMEDIATELY.  He also gave me a reference number to quote, which he said the bank would understand.

As the bank’s number was stored in my mobile, I used that phone to ring them instead.  Whilst doing this, my land line rang again and when I picked it up it was John Wilson again.  He said that he could see a further payment of £900 had just gone through, as an online payment and I really must ring my bank immediately.

I explained that I was trying to.

I did get through to my bank on my mobile.  I explained the call I had received.  They checked and confirmed that nothing had been processed on my card and they then told me that this was a current scam.  The scammers keep the land line "open" and would intercept the call you make to your actual bank, in order to obtain all your security details.

Fortunately, as I rang the bank on my mobile and this did not happen.

This man was very convincing.  He did not ask for any security details in the call to me, but conveyed a real sense of urgency to ring NOW.

Has this been reported before?
Kind regards
Rosemary

THE ANSWER – YES – AN OLD SCAM – NEW COVER.
The way it works is...they panic you and ask you to ring someone instantly.  You put down the receiver to clear the line and then dial the number required.  The trick ?  They don’t hang up.  All the while they do not hang up, your line will not be cleared and they are still connected, even if you dial a new number.  You will dial your bank – or so you think.  In fact, you are dialling no-one, because they are still on the line.  They merely re-answer, as the person, they have told you to call.  This is why it is urgent you ring them, the line will only hold for a certain length of time.  That is when they will obtain all your card details from you.  You are unaware and of course, will not stop the card – which could be several weeks or until your next bill comes in.  NEVER DIAL ANY NUMBER UNLESS YOU CAN HEAR A CLEAR DIALLING TONE – PARTICULARLY IF YOU GET A WARNING CALL LIKE THIS WHICH IS GUARANTEED TO SPOOK YOU AND CATCH YOU OFF GUARD !

SECOND,
I have had this in from Berks Fire and Rescue.  A copy of the letter and the advice handout is attached.

Hi Jeff,

Safe Journey - Top Tips

Please find attached a letter from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) asking people to ‘Take Extra Care on the roads’ during any periods of industrial action by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU).

We wish to reassure you that we will be answering emergency calls but are asking people to ‘take extra care’ on the roads and we are asking you to help us to spread this message to your colleagues, staff and pupils using the resources attached.

Kind regards

Take Extra Care on the roads

As you will be aware, the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is currently in dispute with the Government, over changes to the Firefighters' Pension Scheme & conditions of service and it is possible, this may result in industrial action.
Although Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) has contingency plans in place, during any period of industrial action, we will have significantly fewer resources. We will therefore be prioritising ‘life critical’ incidents, such as house fires and road traffic collisions where people are trapped.

The full letter and advice sheet are attached.

NEXT:
I have had an enquiry from a member in Maidenhead.  Blue spray painted dots about 2 inches accross, have appeared along their road / gates and pavements.  We are checking with the Borough to see if it is anything to do with them – road works / pipe work etc under the pavements.  Thames Water usually uses yellow.  Have these appeared anywhere else ?

A Bike was stolen in Windsor Town Centre:
4/9  Wednesday 7.20 p.m. / 8.20 p.m.  Leisure Pool, Stovell Road.  Locked up bike stolen from a bike rack.  A gents black Specialised Hard Rock bike.  There is a fitting for a child’s seat.  You can see how many bikes are going – please record all the details of your bike - please.  You can take excellent precautions, but there is no guarantee someone isn’t going to try and steal it.  I have attached a BIKE PASSPORT.  Please complete one of these for every bike you own.  Take a photo – on your mobile phone ? then send these to yourself in an email.  If ever your bike is stolen, you can forward those emails to us instantly.  We have a ‘GOLDEN HOUR’  to detect crimes – where a kid may be riding your bike to its final destination – that information will be vital.

NEXT – PLANT 7 MACHINERY:
5/9  Thursday 2 p.m.  Stanwell Road, Horton.  After all the training we have done in Rural Crime and stolen plant and machinery, PC Nick Kluger, who is from the Datchet, Horton & Wraysbury Neighbourhood Team, saw a large trailer that was displaying a different index plate on the back, from the car towing it.  The identification plate had also been ripped off along with all the identifying stickers.  Nick felt these indicators were enough to suspect it had been stolen and he seized it.  We will call in specialised teams who will check the hidden VIN numbers on the trailer to see if they match the current paperwork.  YES !  every motorised vehicle has a VIN number – a metal plate with its registered number.  As you may have seen on TV these are often removed / ground off and replaced by fakes – often very good ones.  As a check for this, the manufacturers attach several ‘Secret VIN Plates’ within the chassis of a vehicle.  We don’t know where these are and the thieves certainly don’t.  We have to call in specialised teams to locate them and verify the correct identification.  This is the second suspicious trailer Nick has seized.  The first had a digger loaded but the orange flashing light had been smashed – possibly in an attempt to remove any tracker device.  Nick is red hot on this !
