Crime: 11 September 2013

I don’t usually do a message on Tuesdays, but I can see metal thefts are creeping up across the area.  These only become apparent when it rains !

On today’s briefing sheet is a report of lead theft from the roof of Holy Trinity Church, Sunningdale between 28/8 – 29/8  This may be a late report.

I just need everyone to be aware and alert at this time.  We have seen a lull in metal theft, which is beginning to build up again.  So, we need reports about vans parked in strange locations at strange – out of work times – near public buildings, village halls and churches.  Flashing has been stolen from a building site in Cookham and we have seen an increase, in theft of copper.

SO – eyes and ears.  IF IN DOUBT RING 101

Property marking – Sheds / garages / vans etc are being targeted, for hand and power tools.
Our PCSOs have all now been supplied with a ‘Cre Marker’ – a white / silver felt tip and a spray of varnish, for property marking.  They will happily come out and property mark all your tools / shed / garage contents.  Being white / silver, the marking is very visible.  If someone breaks into your shed / garage / car / van, they will not want to be caught in possession of ‘property marked’ items, as it will immediately tie them into the theft !  Just email your Neighbourhood Team at their group email – you will see them under each Neighbourhood heading.  They will then make contact with you to come out and property mark – everything !

Sometimes, people become aware of a crime, which has not been reported in one of my messages.  There are many reasons for this.  One may be for operational reasons – We are mounting an operation to investigate a crime / catch an offender and we do not want any publicity at that particular time.  A second may be that there are domestic / family overtones.  Third -  if someone has been charged with an offence.  The minute someone is charged, it becomes ‘sub judice’ and we have to be really careful about what we release, in case it prejudices a subsequent trial – or - a defence lawyer, is able to maintain, that it prejudices his client.
Often this is not a problem, as someone may be arrested, but not immediately charged.  I can therefore publicise the arrest.  It may then take us some time to gather evidence / statements / forensic reports etc. to enable us to ‘charge’ an individual.
Last week, we had a case where an offender was caught bang to rights.  He was located, due to the brilliant and brave involvement of an aggrieved.  The offender was arrested, charged and remanded in a single day, in one smooth operation.  That meant, I can put nothing out, until after the trial, which as you know, can be a very long time afterwards.
I wanted you to know that this can happen and I am unable to include and publicise it, or let you know about the brilliant and hard work, put in by your Neighbourhood Teams and Local CID often working with the public.  An enormous amount does go on behind the scenes, involving Dog Teams, Helicopters, Area Searches etc., but if we get a brilliant result – as in the case last week – I can say nothing about it !!!
