Crime:
30 September 2013
Hi
everyone, I am back from A/L energised and raring to go.
I have had this in from one of my members on Maidenhead:
Hi Jeff
In the context of marker pens available.
The other day I asked, who is our ‘team leader’ ? I was told,
that is the police - fine. However, I am unable to find any way of
contacting you, re property marking. Please, how do I do this, if
someone phones and asks for help with marking ?
Mike
The answer is simple, though I don’t know what Mike means by ‘Team
Leader’. There are 2 ways. You can email your local police
Neighbourhood Team, at their group email below. One of the PCSOs
will then make contact with you and come out to help you – or you can
email me and ask for a UV marker pen ! You can also go online at WWW.IMMOBILISE.COM
and register all your laptops, play stations, X boxes, phones etc. etc.
etc. If the item – for example a valuable piece of furniture /
painting / antique, does not have a serial number, you can enter a
description and give it a reference number of your own. What could
be simpler.
New Scrap Metal Dealers Act comes into
force
From tomorrow (1/10), a new act to regulate scrap metal dealers comes into
force across the Thames Valley and country-wide.
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, all currently licensed scrap metal
dealers, motor salvage operators, and vehicle dismantler’s are required
to have a licence to trade and must apply for one, from their local
authority by the deadline of 15 October.
If they have not obtained a licence by 1 December 2013, they face
prosecution under the new Act and face a fine of up to £1,000, or
conditions including restrictions to trading hours, or a Closure Order.
If they have applied by the deadline, they will be deemed to have a
temporary licence, until the issue. If currently registered dealers, have
not applied for a licence by 15 October, then they will not be able to
trade until a licence is received. Mobile collectors, must apply for
a licence, in every authority area where they intend to collect scrap
from.
Anyone not registered under the 1964 Act, will be liable to prosecution,
if they trade and have not been issued with a licence, under the 2013 Act.
No
scrap metal dealer is able to buy scrap metal with cash.
As of 1 October 2013, this also applies to mobile collectors who
previously had exemptions to this rule.
Under the Act, all dealers are required to keep a record of all scrap
metal they receive, process, or dispatch; including a description and
weight of the metal, the date and time they received it, the name and
address of the seller and any subsequent buyer, and the value of the
metal. This information must be kept for three years and be
available to the local authority and police, on request.

must know by now that there must be no key hooks on display – or, where
it will take a thief less than 5 minutes to find. Those pretty
little boxes with painted doors and hooks inside, are easily recognisable
by offenders – so they will not do. Keys hanging on the back of
kitchen cabinet doors – will not do. Labels on keys – garage key
/ back door key, Mr. Smith at No 26 etc – will not do ! Keys are
particularly vulnerable and must be placed somewhere secure.

PC PETE BULLETT HAS RECEIVED THIS FROM
SURREY POLICE:
Dear Pete,
I have just been made aware of the following website, which may be of
interest to your watch members.
http://www.knowdrugs.org/
The website also has an app available for Apple and Android smart phones /
tablets. It’s aimed at parents and has a great deal of information
around drugs, their effects and first aid.

The app has been designed following discussions with parents of teenagers
by Drugs Consultant Liam Watson, the Director of training agency
Drugstraining.com.
The app includes a full guide to the effects of different drugs, slang
terms and the key signs for parents to look out for with their teenagers.
There are also a range of videos where ex-users give their own first hand
experiences of using various substances including cocaine, cannabis and
ecstasy.
The video question and answer section is presented by actress and
television presenter Nicola Reynolds. The app also features an important
step by step video guide for parents on what to do if their son or
daughter has collapsed after taking drugs.
The creator of the Know Drugs app Liam Watson said: “For many parents
the world of drugs can appear frightening and confusing. With new drugs
and ‘legal highs’ appearing on the market every week it’s no
surprise that parents often feel that their kids know more about drugs
than they do. The Know Drugs app provides parents with regularly updated
information about the drugs, signs to look out for and important tips on
both educating and supporting their teenagers. For the first time parents
can now have all the vital information they require about drugs in the
palm of their hand.”
He added “We know from the feedback we have received already that
parents will find the Know Drugs iPhone app very useful as a means of
educating both themselves and their teenagers about drugs issues.”
‘Know Drugs’ – the Parents Guide is available from today on the
Apple app store or via www.knowdrugs.org
