Cookham Society response to the Cookham Plan 2008

At the meeting of the Committee immediately following the publication of ‘The Plan’, a small subcommittee was set up to draft a measured response from the Society to this document. The draft response will be mailed to all Society Members on or about 15^th February with a request that comments be passed to the Society in time to be included in a more final draft to be discussed at the AGM on 13 March. It will also be placed on the Society’s website where comments may be submitted.

When considering our response, we would ask that our Members bear in mind that ‘The Plan’ is NOT a plan in the sense that anything in it can happen without any further debate; it is only a number of suggestions as to what might or might not be implemented during the next 20 years. Nothing in the Plan can happen without the proper planning processes being followed. These allow anyone to make any objections (or offer support) to the Parish Council and to the Royal Borough before anything can be approved. In any case, whatever these two bodies may decide, any refusal by the Borough planners may be overturned by the Government through the appeals process.

For those of you who would like to take a more active role in the preservation of the Cookhams, there will be the opportunity to join the Society’s Committee at the AGM. The Committee consists of 4 Officers, ie Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer, plus not more than 15 Members. To comply with the Society’s Constitution, no Member shall be elected at the AGM to be an Officer or member of the Committee unless they shall, at such meeting be proposed and seconded by two Members of the Society. In the event that there are more than a total of 19 applicants, a ballot will be held of those Members attending the AGM.
