PROPOSED MARSH MEADOW CAR PARK

In accordance with the Society’s constitution we have received a request for an EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING to give members the opportunity to debate the merits of, and express their views on, the proposed Marsh Meadow parking scheme. At the time of writing the following changes have been incorporated in the scheme to reflect the comments received by the Ron accordance with the Society’s constitution we have received a request for an EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING to give members the opportunity to debate the merits of, and express their views on, the proposed Marsh Meadow parking scheme. At the time of writing the following changes have been incorporated in the scheme to reflect the comments received by the Royal Borough in response to their questionnaire published in October.

The size of the car park has been reduced from 132 to 99 spaces.

All mention of possible future access through the Fire Station has been deleted.

A choice of two possible access roads is proposed, either through the existing NT car park or via the existing agricultural road across the Moor. The final layout will depend on the agreement of the landowners, The National Trust and Copas Farms.

The layout of the car park has been moved further to the east, that is towards the village.

From the returns to the Royal Borough’s questionnaire it was clear that the vast majority of residents wanted something done about car parking in Cookham Village. A majority also supported, in principle, a scheme based on Marsh Meadow, we now need to know whether or not this represents the views of our members.

Finally could we point out that to attend the meeting you must be a fully paid up member of the Society.

John Bowley – Chairman

NOTICE OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

- see agenda on last page

Please note that the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on Thursday 11th May is not to be confused with the EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING taking place on Thursday 27th January at Holy Trinity Parish Centre on the subject of the proposed Marsh Meadow Car Park.

SOCIETY CHRISTMAS CARDS

- many thanks!

We would like to thank most sincerely everyone who has contributed to the success of this year’s Christmas Card venture.

Firstly the artists who contributed their work without charge, that is Juliette Palmer, Michelle Hewett and Sandra Francis.

Secondly the committee members who worked hard, under Mac Macdonald’s direction, in ordering and distributing the cards. Also the local shops who energetically sold the cards over their counters.

And last but not least, you our members who bought the cards and helped us to raise enough money to run the Society for another year.

Next year a Cookham Calendar? – who knows?

MILLENNIUM NOTICE BOARD

- another progress report

We are delighted with the response to our appeal for funds to erect a community Notice Board at Cookham Station. To date we have collected £1200 with further donations promised.

To add to the funds an “Antiques Evening” is being arranged in March, (see panel advert), when you are invited to bring along a treasure for an Antiques dealer to consider, and advise of possible value.

It will be a fun evening, so telephone your favourite committee member to order tickets now to avoid disappointment.

Further donations can be sent to Vice-Chairman Roger Mabey, whose address can be found on the opposite page.

COOKHAM BRIDGE

- footpath decision

Perhaps the Royal Borough does listen to Cookham residents, if we put up a good enough case?
Overall the majority of people surveyed, wished to see the bridge return to two way traffic after the completion of repairs. This result was obviously biased towards drivers who use the bridge at peak times.
Fortunately the Council decided to listen to the opinion of Cookham residents who asked for the lights to be retained. Cookham Bridge 1977
In particular Society members voted almost two to one in favour of retaining the fights, when we carried out our own survey in the summer.
These results were conveyed to the Council. we would like to think that they helped to achieve the hoped for result.
Since there appears to be no immediate prospect of the building of a separate footbridge, we will work with the Council to achieve the best possible results from the lighting system.
We will continue to press for any additional traffic calming measures that might be necessary.
