A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

2001 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM on 24th May at Moor Hall was notable in two respects. Firstly, we had over 70 members in attendance, and secondly, we had to ballot for the Chairman and Committee in view of there being an excess of nominations. We must be the envy of many other local organisations, and it clearly reflects the interest of members in the Society’s activities.

The New Committee is as follows:

THE OLD ANCHOR INN – New Applications

In our last Newsletter (Spring 2001) we made reference to consultations with members who live adjacent to the site.

The overwhelming response was of opposition to the proposals due to the commercial floor space, the sheer bulk of the building, and the unfortunate mock Georgian style employed. We objected to the planning application much along these lines.

Recently two new planning applications were received, one for Conservation Area consent for the demolition of the building and the other an amended plan for the development of the site.  After careful consideration your planning sub-committee were still not content and sent the following opinion to the Planning

PLANNING APLICATIONS 01/37232 & 01/37233

“The Cookham Society opposes the planning application for the development of this site. We consider the

present building is of sufficient importance in a conservation area to be preserved. We would hope that new plans can be submitted that will allow this building to be retained.”

ENVIRONMENT AGENCY – Warning to children

Roger Powling, Project Manager for the construction of the new Jubilee River flood alleviation channel is asking for parents’ help to warn children of the potential dangers of water during the school holidays.

Roger says “I understand that rivers are a great temptation to young people, especially during the warm weather and the summer holidays. I hope that, together with parents, we can discourage children from putting themselves at risk.”

Particular things to consider are:

  • The depth of water in the Jubilee River varies. Jumping into shallow water can be very dangerous and swimming in any water body unsupervised carries the risk of drowning.

  • In some places there might be construction materials under the surface of the water that are not visible from the bank or from bridges. These could cause very serious injury, including paralysis, to anyone jumping into the water and swimming there.

MARSH MEADOW FLOOD DEFENCES – Excellent news

The Environment Agency discussions with the

officers of the Royal Borough have related to the

visual appearance of the wall or bund from the Marsh Meadow side of Berries Road. Up until now the Royal Borough has favoured a bund.

We are pleased to tell you that the officers have now agreed to change their stance and have decided that the flood walls option will now go ahead. This is excellent news.

1000th MEMBER – Georgina Woods

At the Annual General Meeting a milestone was reached when we were able to announce that a long ideal for the Society to welcome it’s 1000th member had come to fruition.

An unsuspecting resident in Poundfield Lane succumbed to the blandishments of our Membership Secretary to join the Society even before she had even completed moving the furniture into her new home. Bill is a supreme master, what chance did the poor girl have.

Georgina Woods is delighted to be living in Cookham now and hopes very much to be able to join us in a practical way with our activities. To mark the occasion the Chairman presented Georgina with a bottle of champagne.

POUNDFIELD – Update

The Policy Manager of the Royal Borough has little to report on the current situation regarding the future of the Poundfield site.

They were actually denied the right to appeal to the House of Lords. However after seeking Counsel’s opinion, which was that they had a strong case, the Borough has submitted an appeal against the Appeal Court decision. That was to remove Poundfield from the Green Belt and that the site be returned to its former designation. This means that the site

effectively becomes White Land and its future is undecided.

It is not possible for the Society to be registered as an Appellant at this stage of the proceedings. The Royal Borough is responsible for the Local Plan, hence they must mount the case. The southern part of the site was included in the Conservation Area, when this was extended a few years ago, which at least is good news.

A NOTE FROM THE TREASURER

As reported at the AGM the Society is financially in a fairly comfortable position, costly

future campaigns notwithstanding. At the present time we have bank balances totalling £16,470.

A very big thankyou to all those members who took a few minutes to complete a Gift Aid Form. You have enabled us to lodge a tax repayment claim with the Inland Revenue for a substantial sum. (350 Gift Aid declarations = £975.00)

As further donations and subscriptions are received we hope to have even more Gift Aid

Declarations so that we can send a claim every year.

CHILDREN’S ART EXHIBITION - Commemorates Spencer

The Society’s Children’s Art Exhibition was produced in conjunction with a special Gala Concert at Holy Trinity Church by the Maidenhead Music Society to commemorate Stanley Spencer’s love of music.

The Summer Exhibition at the Stanley Spencer Gallery this season displays “Spencer’s River and Regatta Scenes”. It naturally followed that this theme was predominant in the Art Exhibition, consisting of work from Cookham Rise and Holy Trinity Primary Schools in Cookham, also the children from Courthouse School in Maidenhead.

Cookham Rise School inspired by Stanley’s “The Scarecrow” made a full-scale model called Brian named after the caretaker at the school. Spencer 3D flowers in bowls were also a feature. The 10-11 year olds had looked closely at Stanley’s river paintings, which produced a delightful “The River at Cookham”.

Holy Trinity School also took a close interest in the river and their 10-11 year olds chose a combination of techniques to make a collage representing water.

There were 3D depictions of Cookham Village houses and also collages. A wonderful selection of these was of the old houses found in School Lane and the High Street.

Courthouse School in Maidenhead had recently visited the Gallery and their after school painting club produced scenes of Cookham for the display.

The exhibition had a steady stream of visitors of all ages; it was judged a success and all were delighted at the incredible high quality content.

Thanks are due to the Trustees of the Stanley Spencer Gallery, to Christine Callund for providing the charming setting in the High Street but most especially to Becky Pinniger for her collaboration with the schools and her setting of the exhibition.

EVENTS AND FUNDRAISING – for the Coming Season

At the last Committee meeting in June an Events Sub-committee was formed with added responsibility for fundraising and publicity.

The sub-committee will be Chaired by Pablo Dubois with Press Officer Margaret Cubley. Other members are Liz Kwantes, Sally Lloyd-Parry and Bill Spicer. The Sub-Committee will seek to maintain the Society’s presence at major events such as the Regatta (1st September) and the Cookham Dean Fete (15th September). Bill Spicer has bought a smart new Gazebo in blue and white stripes (the Society’s colours) which will be used at these events to publicise the work of the Society.

We have a new Christmas Card to sell this year – a delightful painting by Pam Hammond showing Cookham Village under Snow.

We expect these to arrive in time for the two events in September; we will also sell them at various Christmas Card Fairs and through some retail outlets.

We believe that Society events should bring Members together, we therefore plan a Christmas Party at the Cricket Club on 16th November with the Fabulous Shirtlifters Jazz Band. In the New Year we will focus on various aspects of Cookham’s heritage which will form the basis of another event.

To make news of the Society more readily accessible we now have a new Web site – thanks to Liz Kwantes – www.cookhamsociety.org.uk, which although still linked to www.cookham.com may be accessed independently.

The content is being updated and improved.
