REVIEW OF SWEENEY TODD THE BARBER performed at the Pinder Hall from 30 March - 1 April 2000
Another great and gory hit for the Tarrystone Players!
The audience was treated to an evening of Victorian
melodrama and they entered into the spirit by hissing and booing in true
pantomime fashion.
The last time this play was performed by the Tarrystone Players was twenty years ago: in that production the darker themes were emphasized and "the chair" tipped its victims dramatically backwards. This time the play was produced in a much lighter vein, the emphasis being more on the comedy. "The Chair" this time slide gracefully backwards behind a funereal curtain to the accompaniment of music and strobe lighting.
Hayley Cox as Tobias Ragg deserves a special mention for a spirited performance and the heroine Johanna Oakley, played by Lucy Roberts, for her lovely singing. There were many high points in the play one being the amusing duet between Mr and Mrs Oakley. John Brooks played a convincing villain and both the actors and the audience enjoyed a good night out. I for one did not dare to try one of the pies in the interval but I heard that they were very good……
