OPEN
FORUM
Mrs Kim Benge from Cookham Lock spoke at length about the decision of the
Environment Agency to sell off the homes of lock-keepers to either a third
party or for holiday lets. She said that the situation for their home at
Cookham Lock was likely to be holiday lets. Mr and Mrs Benge had lived in
Cookham for almost twenty years and would like to remain here but would be
unable to afford a property on their present income. She said there were
22 lock-keepers’ families who would be re-housed but at present only
five alternative homes were available. Mrs Benge was surprised that no one
from the EA had contacted either ourselves or John Lewis who owned Odney
Common across which was the main access to Cookham Lock. She spoke of the
many extra duties carried out by her husband in monitoring the public on
Odney Common and the vehicles using Lullebrook Bridge. There was also the
health and safety aspect of only having a lock-keeper during working hours
as this would substantially add to the risk of flooding in the Cookham
area. The Councillors asked various other questions which Mrs Benge
answered. Mr David Ricardo then spoke to ask if the Clerk could get a copy
of the amended flood relief plans recently advertised by the EA.
The
Chairman asked permission of the Council to bring the item on Cookham Lock
forward. This was AGREED and will be reported in the minutes of the Full
Council Meeting.
