‘Valuable’ guidance from government shows Royal Borough on track with Local Plan, minimising impact on Green Belt

Newly issued guidance from the government has vindicated the Royal Borough’s approach to developing the Borough Local Plan – and provided further substance to the council’s bid to minimise impact on the Green Belt.

That’s the word from Cllr MJ Saunders, cabinet member for planning and property, following the release of a public letter from planning minister Nick Boles. The letter was sent following the Planning Inspector’s report on Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s Local Plan.

Cllr Saunders said: “Having carefully considered this letter, it makes clear that our approach is sound – to evaluate the important contributions to the Green Belt of individual sites, and to balance these against the need for housing.

“And it confirms that we – the council, in consultation with residents, local organisations and businesses – are the judges of where to strike the balance.

“Of course we do have to substantiate this with the planning inspector, and justify why the majority of the Green Belt should not be used for more housing.

“We are determined to protect our precious countryside and the Green Belt. Following this latest and valuable guidance from the government, I want to reassure residents that we will make full use of it to minimise as far as possible any impact on our Green Belt.”
