Older residents can enjoy plenty of free activities and events on Silver Sunday (Sunday 5 October), a nationwide celebration of the value and knowledge older people contribute to our communities.

In the Royal Borough residents can enjoy free health checks, free swims, exercise checks, a photography competition, guided walks and much more.

Cllr David Coppinger, cabinet member for adult services and health, said: “We are holding lots of free activities and promotions for the over-50s to celebrate their valued contribution to society.

“I hope many of our residents take part in this event and enjoy the fantastic array of free events and offers that have been provided. If you know someone in the borough who would benefit from one of these activities then bring them along – everybody is welcome.”

Just some of the events that over-50s can take part in include:

  • Free health screen checks – Magnet and Windsor Leisure Centres, 5 October, 9.30am to 4.30pm
  • S.M.I.L.E. exercise classes – Magnet Leisure Centre, 5 October, 10.30 to 11.30am
  • Free swims – Magnet and Windsor Leisure Centres, 5 October, all day
  • Inspirations for daily living event – A free marketplace event designed to introduce older people to the range of equipment and technology that can help them in their day-to-day life, Desborough Suite, Maidenhead Town Hall, Friday 3 October, 10.30am to 3.30pm
  • Photography competition – Berkshire Carers Service has invited carers to capture a ‘silver moment’. Entries will be entered into a prize draw with the chance to win a £50 voucher from a retailer of the winner’s choice. Entries should be sent to by Friday 31 October. Visit for further information.
  • Silver Surfer drop-in sessions – Windsor Library, Bachelors Acre, and Maidenhead Library, St Ives Road – 5 October, 11am to 2pm.

Silver Sunday was launched in 2012 by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Cllr Christabel Flight after a report discovered more than a third of people over 75 said they were lonely. The aim was to celebrate older residents and to help them get out and about and meet new people.

To find out more about the timetable of activities, visit the Royal Borough’s website or drop into a council office or library to pick up a leaflet.
