Safer Roads Berkshire has been recognised with a prestigious royal award for its pioneering approach to improving road safety.

The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award was presented to Safer Roads Berkshire which consists of representatives of the county’s unitary authorities, including the Royal Borough.

The award recognises the partnership’s outstanding contribution to improving road safety.

Safer Roads Berkshire has been operating under a redesigned structure since 2011. The new structure offers greater value for money and maintains expertise to improve safety on the county's roads.

The new way of delivering road safety has reduced costs and helped to deliver a wider range of more effective road safety initiatives to support each authority. A programme of work addresses issues ranging from pedestrian training and child car seat use through to cycle safety, driving for work and risks associated with ageing.

His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent approved the recommendation of the judging panel that the Safer Roads Berkshire management service should receive an award.

The judges said the nomination was ’a fine example of good quality road safety management’.

Cllr Geoff Hill, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Being a member of this partnership allows us to improve road safety across the Royal Borough and the wider county while reducing the cost for our residents.

“I’m delighted the valuable work we do with Safer Roads Berkshire has received a royal seal of approval.”

The award was presented by John Plowman, former head of roads at the Department for Transport, now a director the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety.
