Throughout September and October the Royal Borough’s recycling team will be busy distributing a year’s supply of bin liners to those of you living in houses to use with your indoor food waste caddy.

The scheme aims to get more residents recycling their food waste. Recent research carried out by the council showed that while some are busy recycling leftovers, peelings and out of date food, there are still those who have yet to give food waste recycling a go.

And while one in four people think the food we throw away does not cost that much, actually food waste currently costs an average household £60 a month.

Cllr Carwyn Cox, cabinet member for environmental services, said: “A big thank you to those residents who do recycle their food waste and show their support for the food waste collection service.

“We are aiming to reduce the amount of harmful and costly waste going to landfill. The scheme is simple and easy to use and we would like to urge even more residents to start recycling their food waste and take advantage of the service which will ultimately save them and the council money.

“Those residents already using their food caddy are realising just how much food they are wasting and we hope those trying it out see how much food they throw away and will be inspired to continue to use the service.”
