Stanley Spencer Gallery Cookham

Registrar (Collections and Exhibitions)

The Stanley Spencer Gallery (http://www.stanleyspencer.org.uk/) is a self-supporting charitable trust and receives no endowment. It is run entirely by volunteers and is a fully accredited museum. Its mission is to promote public understanding and enjoyment of the paintings of Stanley Spencer. We are looking for a registrar to facilitate our twice-yearly exhibitions schedule and manage our permanent collection.

Remuneration: negotiable, on a self-employed basis

Type: responsive to workload, but we anticipate one day or eight hours per week, for a fixed period of one year (with possible renewal)

Closing date: 16 June 2017

Job Description:

You will be a key part of the Gallery team, co-ordinating registrarial procedures relating to the care, management and documentation of the Gallery’s collections and co-ordinating loans in and out.

You will have proven experience of working with a museum collection and knowledge of national/international museum standards for the management, documentation, transportation, handling, packing and security of works of art, combined with an understanding of GIS and commercial insurance, and experience of art transport procurement. You will have demonstrable ability in the assessment and mitigation of risks to works of art and in handling them with sensitivity. You will also be able to work to tight deadlines and problem solve, and have excellent IT, organisational and inter-personal skills.

You will similarly have a proven experience in the management of long-term loans (agreements, valuations and GIS cover) and of permanent collections.

Experience of working with volunteers, as well as knowledge or art techniques and twentieth-century British art, would be an advantage.

You will report to the board of Trustees (attending meetings where necessary) and liaise closely with the Management Committee (attending meetings where necessary). Attendance at Exhibitions Committee meetings would be mandatory.
You will liaise with the volunteer hanging team and conservators as needed.
