There are 130,000 police officers in England and Wales policing a population of over 55 million, and covering an area of 58,380 sq. miles. With the three largest conurbations, London, Manchester and Birmingham having 30,000, 7,500 and 7,500 police officers respectively, police resources are stretched and in great demand.
The greatest single deterrent and prevention of crime is self-help, and when acted upon collectively, becomes a significant force for the good. Thames Valley Police are very supportive of NHWM, and along with the PCC, have very close links with Thames Valley NHWM at force level. We now aim to build on this foundation at a local level, especially in the burglary initiative building up to Christmas.
By becoming a NHW Watch member locally, you will benefit from support from the Home Office and NHWM, nationally, with access to various security products and advice, along with co-ordinators receiving insurance covering liability for watch activities. They are also supported by the Co-Op as a main sponsor.
Since its inception in the 1960s, the concept of NHW has grown worldwide and is very active in developed countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia, and has proven to be a very successful crime reduction tool. It has also enhanced community spirit and involvement.

Interesting, having mentioned Oz. They have a third the number of our police covering an area getting on for the size of the USA. Might be they have some good ideas we could use over here?

Hi Birdman,

I think Australia is a rather different situation, Australian population 24.5 million, UK population 66.5 million. Population density Australia 3.14 per square kilometre, UK density 272 or England 427 per sq. km. I realise that the density stats are a bit misleading as the centre of Australia is basically a great big desert where few people live but the ratio of the amount of police to population seems similar.

Whilst they talk about neighbourhood watch, a couple of years back one of my neighbours witnessed the postman being harassed by 2 men whilst he was delivering mail to the house next door. The 2 men then took the mail from the postman and as a result the mail recipient's bank account was emptied. My quick thinking neighbour took photos of the men and their vehicle, he then informed the police but was subsequently never contacted by them. I can only assume that they saw it as an insurance job and had more important issues to deal with, no wonder our insurance premiums are so high. It also hardly encourages a neighbourhood watch.
