ANOTHER BOGUS BUILDER INCIDENT:
20/11 Wednesday 5 p.m. Maidenhead. Two men knocked on the door of an elderly resident. He said that he and colleagues are working in the area and that they had been doing work 2 doors down. When they mentioned guttering The aggrieved said he was aware that he needed to get the gutters cleared, as they were blocked with leaves. The man at the door, said that he could do the guttering for £80. The aggrieved negotiated him down to £60.
Two men then got ladders out a van and climbed up to the roof. Whilst they were up there, they informed the aggrieved that there were some loose tiles that would need replacing.
The aggrieved wanted to go up the ladder himself to see, but the men said for insurance purposes, he couldn't, so he asked for a photo, which they took and showed him. They said to complete the work, would be £300.
When it came to payment for the guttering being cleared the aggrieved only had £40 cash available, so he gave them that and they agreed, it would cover it.
The aggrieved then rang his wife and explained the situation. She then spoke to the man and told him that they do not need to roof tiles to be replaced nor any more work done. The men then left. When she got home a few minutes later, she asked neighbours if anything the men had said was true. None of them had had any work done. She had only been out of the house for about 10 minutes and believes they had been targeted as they were elderly and the 2 men had been watching the house, waiting for her to leave.
