What caused the strange lights swirling in the sky over Cookham Dean for a few hours on Saturday night/Sunday morning? (Other than the helicopter's search light.)

Most likely model hot air balloons, that are becoming popular these days.

Thanks Dragonman, but it wasn't individual lights, but one big continuous swirling pattern in the sky. At first I thought rather like The Northern Lights. It was as if a helicopter was on the ground with a strong light projecting up through it's rotating blades. It went on for well over an hour (I watched after midnight and checked again on & off, having been first alerted by the circling helicopter). It was very wierd!

Since you heard the helicopter it is highly likely that it was hand held searchlignts.

It looked like a laser light show to me.

We saw the helicopter - it definitely was not the source of the light which seemed to have been projected from the ground in Bisham or Hurley

Thanks everyone. Glad to know others saw it too: I was beginning to think I had imagined it! It wasn't hand-search lights as it was way too big; also, it went on for much longer than the searching helicopter.

Just a thought........... you mentioned the lights over Cookham Dean.. Sat night... there was a big Firework display from Henley Riverside after the Rewind Festival on Saturday and of course there was continous lighting for the stage etc through the event so perhaps the glow etc even tho seen from Cookham Dean may in fact have been triggered from Henley? its only 7 miles away and the Dean is on a hill......

Thanx Rhubarb: that seems the most likely explanation.

I'm quite disappointed that it wasn't something strange but I did see a dalek in Cookam Rise to day and now I feel quite vulnerable because I haven't got any stairs to hide up. I've got 2 sofas though and I might be ok if I get behind both of them! Shocked
