This Friday (19th April 2013) there is a very special event happening at Sanctum in the Green in Cookham Dean –  the Ultimate Elton John tribute performed by Paul Bacon. There will also be an à la carte menu provided by celebrity chef, Luke Thomas, who is the focus of the BBC 3 documentary, Britain’s Youngest Head Chef on Wednesday, 17th April. Locals are also welcome to just drop by for a drink and enjoy some good music. You will be assured of a warm welcome by Sanctum's new managers, Colin and Tina Rooney.

Paul Bacon aka Ultimate Elton, is a lifelong Elton John fan. He first started singing and performing Elton’s songs whilst studying Performing Arts at University, in the early 1980s.  He spoke of his passion for the job:

How did you become the Ultimate Elton?

I’ve been working primarily as an Elton tribute now for just over 4 years. I’ve always been a big fan of Elton’s music right back to the 1970s, so it’s a real pleasure to be able to share that passion with others. I’ve clocked up over 200 gigs now, and find myself working 2 or 3 nights a week.

You have met Sir Elton - when and where? What was the experience like?

I met Sir Elton last year backstage at the LG Arena in Birmingham. As I was with Cookham-based record producer, Stuart Epps, who has toured the States with Sir Elton, I was hoping to go backstage and perhaps meet Elton’s band (which I did). But I was not really expecting to be invited, along with Stuart, into Elton’s dressing room! Elton was fantastic and totally charming. I was wearing a suit that I had bought at one of his ‘Out the Closet’ sales in London. The first thing he said to me was “You’re wearing one of my suits!” It was a privilege to meet him, not least because it’s the question I get asked the most – “Have you ever met Elton?”

Why do you enjoy performing so much? Have you performed all around the country?

As a huge Elton fan, it’s always a pleasure to sing his wonderful songs. I am being asked to travel further afield all the time. I have been to Norway and indeed will be returning to Norway with my band in July.

Have you ever been confused for Sir Elton?

I do occasionally get confused for Elton, mainly by Americans! I was walking through Caesars Palace in Las Vegas last year dressed as Elton, and a lady was convinced that I was Elton. I asked her not to make a fuss as I didn’t want to cause a scene! I guess I only had myself to blame!

I think I also confused Kiki Dee for a moment or two when I appeared as Elton at Stuart's (and Juliet‘s) wedding last year, but that's another story! It’s a strange thing. Obviously I like audiences to enter into the spirit of what I’m doing, but I find it a little uncomfortable when people think I really am Elton!

Will people be able to request their favourite Elton hits at Sanctum on the Green on Friday night?

I do try to play all of Elton’s most memorable hits, but it is nice when someone does ask for a less well-known song such as ‘Skyline Pigeon’ or ‘Original Sin’. I do draw the line though at ‘Regimental Sergeant Zippo’!

How well do you know Sanctum? Any fond memories?

This will be my first appearance at the Sanctum. I have been before for drinks and a meal, and it’s a terrific place, so I’m really looking forward to playing there.
