Winter 2006 - Newsletter |

Editor’s MessageThere’s
still a long time before the season starts but there is still plenty
going on and, of course preparation for the new season. At the end of
last season there was a noticeable upsurge in interest in cricket.
Something to do with the Ashes, I believe. Let’s hope that the
interest will transfer to the new season as we will still be putting out
4 adult teams each weekend and run regular colt’s matches. The
colt’s section of the club gives us great pride. Last year we had
nearly 90 youngsters aged 8 to 17. Many of them are developing into
excellent cricketers. Most of the older colts have already represented
the club in one of the adult games and we would not put 4 teams out each
weekend without their contribution. In fact, in many cases we would not
even be competitive without the colts. It gives so much pleasure to see
such rapid development. Club
Captain’s Message – Another
year passes by - a year during which England regained the Ashes before
getting thumped in Pakistan and Cookham Dean Cricket Club avoided
winning either of the Morrants League Divisions for a 12th
consecutive season! But
things will change in 2006 as far as CDCC cricket is concerned, and the
two Captains Pres Patel and Andy Pett are quietly confident of their
respective goals. With the Colts ranks swelling in both talent and
numbers, the feeder into the senior teams will ensure that the older
colts will gain in both experience and responsibility, whilst the elder
statesmen (an ageing Club Captain amongst others) look for refuge on the
nearest sun-lounger beside an open Bar! There
were discussions at the start of 2005 as to how CDCC could both survive
AND preserve playing cricket at Ricketts Field in the future, and this
is an issue that can only be addressed by Members of this Club. The
Committee have tried every ruse in the book to attract new players, and
whilst the Colts ranks swell (thanks to the Ashes success and an
excellent Colts Manager), recruitment of older players remains at a
minimum. So it is up to YOU - your Club needs YOU.
Get out there and convince your friends to at least "give
CDCC a go".
Other clubs seem to find it easy to poach our young players, so
why shouldn't we do the same to them ? Let's not sit back and hope for
someone else to do the spade work, because if everyone thought that way,
CDCC will almost certainly implode within 5 years. This is not an option
I, as Club Captain, will entertain- so let us get to work. With
the overindulgence of Christmas now confined to history, the next major
event on the horizon is the Indoor Nets at St Piran's which start in
February. So tone up, shed the fat and get the kit ready - it's time to
start preparing for next season! Yes ... .in 6 weeks time! One
final point to ALL cricket playing members - if there is anything
at all you wish to address, discuss, bitch about or debate, and I mean
anything - I am always available. As Club Captain I am here to see to your
needs as well as the Club's, so please bear this in mind - my door
will always be open to you, whatever the issue. Here's
to a successful 2006 season. Gents
Dinner Our
main social event of the winter is the Gents Dinner. This year the
dinner will be Saturday 28 Jan at AGM Roll-up,
roll-up! This is the event of the year. The one event that is not to be
missed. Another episode of “Fools and Horses” takes place in the
club house on Thursday 23rd February
at Indoor
Nets Nets
are at St Pirans School on Sundays - From
19th Feb to 9th April 3-4 pm for U13 and from 19th March to 9th
April 4-5pm for older colts and adults. There is no need to book –
just turn up. If you do want more details contact Andy
Millar. CDCC
Whites Last
year we arranged cricket shirts and jumpers. These have the CDCC colours
and logo on them. Prices will depend on demand but are expected to be £20
for shirts and £25 for jumpers. Last season most of the senior players
bought the kit and this season we are extending the offer to the colts.
You can order from Cricket
Tour It’s
now been a few years since our last tour to A Last
season 78 different players had at least one game for the club at a
weekend. Some played once only and others played every week –
sometimes twice a week. Our Saturday league teams rely on a core team to
ensure there is a balance of batsmen, bowlers and to foster team spirit.
However, our Sunday teams are far more flexible. These are truly village
teams. Every year we integrate into the player pool another couple of
people who haven’t played for a couple (or ten) years. Some of these
have progressed to one of the league teams and others are quite content
to turn out 3 or 4 times a year on a Sunday. We can, and do, accommodate
these people. Most of these new players are dads.
Imagine the pride you will feel as you take the field (open the
batting, even) with your young son! Give me, George
Allard, or Colts 2005
was a big year for Colts Cricket at the Dean, with large numbers of
new and enthusiastic young cricketers learning to play and enjoy the
game. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make it happen, especially
the team managers and to all the parents who helped both with the
coaching and in other ways. Also, to the inimitable Gerry Charles for
his enthusiasm and expertise which was invaluable. We
have again entered 5 teams in the Berkshire Leagues for 2006 from
U9 to U17. Team Managers will be in touch before the start of indoor
practice to let you know details of when and where your team will be
practicing. Any assistance from parents is greatly appreciated,
especially at the younger age groups, so please feel free to get
involved. Finally,
Congratulations to the players who were successful in County and
District Trials and Bad Luck to those to missed out on this occasion. E-Mail As
you can imagine the printing and distribution of this newsletter is a
lot of work. So, this is the last one to be printed on paper.
If you received this letter by e-mail then I have an e-mail
address for you. There are a couple of people without e-mail. If they
would contact me I will ensure that they receive the letter by post. So,
if you have an e-mail address and would like this newsletter (and other
communications from the club) then you will have to send me, George
Allard, your e-mail address. Key ContactsGeorge
