Crime: 14 January 2011

1. I have had a lot of feedback re strange unsolicited phone calls. The general consensus is:
‘Just either put the phone down, or state very clearly that you are not interested, then put the phone down (if like me you just want to be polite).
Very good advice indeed.

2. Crimestoppers – 0800 555 111
Someone made a call to Crimestoppers about a suspicious vehicle. That information was sent through to the local police who immediately traced the vehicle and carried out a stop check. The information was reliable. If you don’t want to talk to us directly, you can always contact Crimestoppers on the above number, completely anonymously – at least the intelligence gets through.

A message from Ch Insp Dave Gilbert from this morning’s briefing:

I would be really grateful if everyone would put the PEC (Police Enquiry Centre) number (0845 8 505 505) in their mobiles, so that it is immediately to hand, when they think they might need it - and - please remember to use it ?

During the day:
We need to know if you see anything during the day, which draws your attention – this includes people going up and down driveways where, instead of simply pushing a leaflet through a letterbox, they start looking into windows, looking over garden fences or up side accesses. We would like to know if anyone has called at your door asking for money / strange directions / information etc etc. - a description is vital. When we carry out house to house enquiries after a burglary, people often reveal that a strange car had been seen in the road a few days before, or someone had been round knocking on doors and they were definitely suspicious – and remembered – but were not reported to us. Often people feel they should only report ‘crime’ to us. ‘I didn’t want to bother the police’, ‘A person called at the door, but they didn’t do anything wrong nor illegal’ ‘Why would I call the police’ ? If someone has d rawn your attention; if you look and ask yourself – ‘what are they doing’ – ‘why is that car driving so slowly down my road’ – we really need to know. We only have a small pool of offenders that carry out the majority of our crimes – even a brief description could identify one of those and trigger a response from us.

At dusk and during the early hours.
If you are walking a dog, driving to or from work, a night out, or just out etc.. Please keep your eyes and ears open. People walking around residential streets, at a time everyone should be at home asleep, needs to be phoned through. As Jeffrey keeps reminding you – the ‘Jigsaw Hypothesis’. You see 2 lads ‘walking home’ at 3, 4 or 5 a.m. and think nothing of it, but we have reports of car crime / burglaries, a few streets away. We don’t know where to look for possible offenders. Your call could be the missing piece, we really need, to solve a crime. You may not actually know what it is you have seen – nor, why it is important to us. The answer is simple – if in doubt – call. Simply tell the PEC operator that you have seen something that may be suspicious and you have been asked to phone it in. Job done.

Whilst writing to you – can I remind everyone to double lock their houses at night and when you go out. This also applies to cars, whenever they are parked up. Re car crime - some people who have had their cars searched, were certain they had locked their car, ‘unknown means of entry’ – This may be, because the fob has not actually locked the car. The signal can be blocked by all sorts of other gadgets including electronic up and over garage doors – If you use the FOB, you must always check a door handle, to make sure the car is in fact locked.

Have a safe, crime free weekend.
Ch. Inspector Dave Gilbert
