Crime: 22 June 2012

First, as you know, I go on and on, about not dealing with anyone that cold calls at your front door ‘I DO NOT BUY GOODS OR SERVICES AT THE DOOR’ – this is why !  The case reported to us, was in Maidenhead, but the men were thought to be working in other places across the Borough.  An elderly resident was cold called by 2 men who said she needed some trees cut down.  She refused and told them to go away.  They then cut the tree down anyway and demanded £200.  Eventually, they took her to the bank, to draw out the cash.  The bank became suspicious and called the police on her behalf.  The 2 men were arrested.  This type of offence often goes unreported, but these 2 men are previously known to us.  Can you keep an eye on any elderly or vulnerable neighbours, who may use people who call at the door, because they seem to be cheap and convenient – it never works out that way.  If skips appear, just email the Neighbourhood Team below, they can arrange to happen to walk past and make discrete enquiries.  Please also remember ‘Repair With Care’ and their list of Trustworthy Tradesmen for anyone of pensionable age:

Next.  One of our members has received an email from the ‘Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, re Register of Electors 2012/2013’ asking him to confirm if there are any changes to the voters, registered at his home.  He wondered if it was genuine, as it was asking for personal details.  I have contacted the Electoral Roll department at the Borough – who has confirmed it is genuine.  This was an attempt to save postage and paper.  I have pointed out to them, that our advice is never to respond to an email asking for personal information and this may well cause them a problem.

Connected to this, is some advice from our volunteer IT consultant Paul Hay, who very generously donates his time to look after fellow NHW members:

Jeff,

Have you seen this ? http://www.met.police.uk/fraudalert/docs/mps_little_book_big_scams.pdf

Looks like a good little booklet, offering advice on all sorts of scams. May be worth sending out to your members.

Regards Paul

Many thanks Paul – I have read it cover to cover – 48 pages and thought it was brilliant.  It has been produced by the Met Pol working with Esther Rantzen.  It is full of contact numbers and email links.  Please send the link on to everyone you know. – I HAVE ALSO ATTACHED A COPY.

Third.  Anti Social Behaviour.

You may well have heard a lot on the news about the publication of a new report on ASB published by HMIC today.  There is one report covering ASB generally after an Inspection earlier this year- A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION - and a sub report about ASB in the Thames Valley , which is quite complimentary.  I have attached both for your night time reading.

MEMBERS EMAILS:

When I say we need you to report suspicious incidents – this is exactly what I mean and we are really grateful to one of our members for this:

Jeff,

I witnessed something this evening at about 5.45pm which may have come to nothing. However, I thought I should let you know what I saw, as I am not sure how it ended and if anything did happen that was reported, what I did see may be helpful.

I was turning left out of the road from where the Holiday Inn is onto Shoppenhangers Road . A silver Audi A4 convertible let me out.  I noticed the driver and passenger were very stocky men. As we were queuing for the first roundabout, you have to be in the right hand lane to go straight across. The Audi was pushing to get past me into the left lane, so I continued to nudge forward to let him past.  He put his foot down and sped straight across both roundabouts and then proceeded to slow right down.

I thought perhaps something was wrong with his car, as he started to wave the silver VW (either polo or golf) to go past him, just before the Cox Green roundabout. The car passed and the Audi then proceeded to speed up and tail the VW.  The VW turned right into Lowbrook and was forced to slow right down, as parked cars on the left were preventing onward travel.  The driver of the Audi sped into Lowbrook, stopped and jumped out of his car and was chasing towards the VW.

I had to continue and didn’t turn down Lowbrook, as I was on my way to collect my daughter from nursery and I do not have a hands free phone. I was very concerned and after I collected my daughter, took a diversion home to check, but neither car was still about.

The man who got out of the Audi was very stocky, skin head, probably 40 wearing grey cargo shorts and  long sleeved cream top.  Although I didn’t see how this ended, I was certain that with the erratic driving and way that he jumped out of his to take chase, was not to say a friendly hello.

It may have come to nothing, but I wanted to report this in case anything did happen and has been reported.  I didn’t catch the full registration of the Audi but am certain the 1st four digits were XXXX.

I am not sure whether this will be helpful of not, but thought it best to share what I saw.

Kind Regards

Absolutely right – we are really grateful.
