Crime: 14 September 2012

There was an interesting case in Ascot and I feel the subsequent advice, is relevant for everybody:

12/9  Wednesday 2.30 a.m.   The owner of a car was awoken by their alarm sounding and the car lights flashing. They looked out and saw 2 youths wearing hooded tops, running away. She phoned the police who were patrolling in the area and attended immediately. Two people were located in a road nearby and arrested. The owner checked the car and found nothing had been stolen and the car was not damaged in any way. What they did find, was that the car fob did set the alarm – BUT DID NOT LOCK THE CARWe have had several cases recently where people were convinced they had locked their cars, but they were entered ‘BY UNKNOWN MEANS’ – meaning there was no damage. For Insurance purposes the car would be classified as left INSECURE. If as in this case, there are occasions where your fob will cause the car lights to flash and set the alarm, but not lock the car – it is even more vital that you check a car door handle.

NEXT THE MICROSOFT SCAM STILL GOING:

If you get any sort of cold call from a computer company to help you with your computer, say nothing and put the phone down !

Hi Jeff,

Thought I would send a message to warn people about a phone call scam that happened today. They ring you and ask you to turn your computer on to put something on your computer, as there is a virus on "microsoft" causing people to lose data.  We said that we weren't going to turn our computer on and they were really insistent that we should turn our computer on.  When we said that we didn't know who they were all, they said they were "virtual EC labs" we looked them up on Google and they do not seem to exist.  They are also on a withheld number, and couldn’t give us a number to call them back. We didn't give any details or go to their website.  They eventually hung up on us, once they knew we weren't going to give any details.

I just want to let everyone know so they don't get viruses/hacked accounts as this seems very dodgy.

Thank you,

Justine

Do not fall for it.

NEXT DOUBLE GLAZING SCAM

Hello Jeff,

Just wanted to pass on what happened to me on Monday evening. A double glazing salesman cold called at my house and advised me that the local police, had been onto their Company, asking them to advise the people they were cold calling, that there has been a spate of local burglaries in the area and the main cause was 'pop out windows'!

Is this really true????? I am sure not!!!

I gave him short shrift and sent him on his way, but afterwards, thought about vulnerable and elderly folk living on their own. (I am a district nurse and care for vulnerable adults). I have emailed the Company and told them about their poor selling tactics, but thought you may like to made aware. This occurred in Maidenhead.

Regards,

Karen

We have had a problem with thieves popping out double glazed windows in the past, but I have not seen a case in several years.  The way it worked was:  many years ago when people first had double glazing units installed, they were just windows / patio doors and no-one considered the security implications.  They were simple devices, made as easy as possible for the installers to put in.  The angled beading securing the glass panels was secured on the outside and the beading simply clicked into place.  Just as it was easy to click in – it was just as easy to click out !  Thieves would use a screwdriver to simply click out or lever up the beading, lift out the glass panel and walk in.  Double glazing units were re-designed many years ago, to prevent this and now, the angled beading is always on the inside.  It was the same for sliding patio doors.  In the beginning, for ease of installation, the sliding door was on the outside.  Thieves simply used a garden spade to lift in up from the sliding track and then out.  Now all sliding doors are on the inside to prevent this happening.

I can add – we do not work with any companies in this way.  If they say so, they are misleading you.

Please remember our NHW MOTTO:

WE DO NOT BUY GOODS AND SERVICES AT THE DOOR – Thank them and politely, but firmly – CLOSE THE DOOR.
