MEMBERS COMMENTS:
RE THE ADVICE FOR THE WINDOWS COLD CALLERS – We work for Windows and can see your computer has some problems and is running slowly.....
Hi Jeff,
You can get rid of these calls !
I've been in business for three decades and I used to be a salesman in the 1980s.

Whenever anybody rings just say my son (or daughter) deals with that and he's here on Wednesdays. They rarely call back but if they do "he's on holiday this week, not in yet, just left, having his lunch etc. Very rarely a sales person is persistent and rings back on Wednesday.
In that case, as well as saying he's is very difficult to contact just say (After asking if it's a sales call and we are on the telephone preference list) "My son says leave your name and number and he will ring you back" They won't do this and you can say that your son says if you don't leave your name and number he doesn't want to speak to you.

The caller is trained to get info and will ask endless questions: Is there another number I can reach your son on? Is he the person that pays the phone bill/gas bill etc.
The only reply necessary is "I'm sorry but we don't give out information to people we don't know" (or cold callers).

Q:Who am I speaking to?
A: Who are you calling? You have to ring back and speak to my son on Wednesday./ "I'm sorry but we don't give out information to people we don't know" (or cold callers). What is your name and number etc.

Q:Are you the home owner?
Who is calling and what is your phone number? "I'm sorry but we don't give out information to people we don't know"
"my son (or daughter) deals with that and he's here on Wednesdays. "I'm sorry but we don't give out information to people we don't know" (or cold callers). What is your name and number etc.
Never give out information. Answer questions with questions.

Don't get upset. They will!  NEVER GIVE ANY INFORMATION!
Ask them to put it in writing to the address/email they have on file. NEVER GIVE THEM YOUR ADDRESS/EMAIL when they ask you to confirm it. Nearly always they don't even know who they are ringing.
The best way to treat it is a game. Invent a son called Jasper or Jimmy and when somebody does ring back saying "Is Jasper in?" "Jasper asked me to ring him today when I spoke to him yesterday" etc
you know immediately it's a salesperson/conman/scammer and can deal with it easily.

AND FROM CHRIS, FOLLOWING ON FROM THE ADVICE YESTERDAY:-

Hi Jeff,
It's even more effective - if you really do have an Apple !
Chris

Finally – as I have said, I am having difficulty putting out warnings, re ‘strange’ emails. If I use any of the wording from these emails, your computer recognises it as dodgy and sends a bounce back to TV Alert. Alert then immediately suspends that recipient ! I have 1,400 of you suspended at the moment. Myself and a team of volunteers are working through the list – re-activating everyone as quickly as we can. As I say, I have to be very careful with the words I use ! Someone has let me know that the ‘UPS’ delivery email plus attachments, is still doing the rounds. Do not print out the ‘attached’ label. Just bin it.
