Crime: 2 November 2012

First a follow up on my piece about Nottingham Knockers. You all know to report them (the young lads going door to door selling household products), but I am mindful that we add about 100 new people to the system each month. Many of these new members, may not have the faintest clue what we are discussing ! Those of us who have been on the system since it’s purchase in 1997, are old hands and heard all this before !!!

I was discussing door to door sellers in the office and we wondered, how often they heard the sound of door chains going on, before the door was opened to them ????? Rarely I suspect ! As I said, the lads’ job is to locate elderly / vulnerable / gullible people, who have wads of cash in their houses. I should also add, that apart from saying – I AM SORRY I DO NOT BUY GOODS AND SERVICES AT THE DOOR – our NHW motto – please do not enter into any conversation. We are programmed to be helpful, so when asked – ‘I tried the house next door, but there was no reply’ ? We might respond – ‘No, they are so lucky, they are away on a 3 week, 5 star holiday in the Carribean’ ! ‘No, they are bankers in the city and rarely get home before 9 p.m.’ !!!! All too easy. Don’t be the person who closes the door and says....OOooooh ! - perhaps I should not have told him that !!!

Anyone going from door to door selling anything (apart from food & books – don’t ask – it is historical) must have a ‘Pedlars Certificate’ issued by a police force. These last one year and the person must be suitable to hold one. They are also not transferable, so we – in this area laminate them with a photo. When the police stop check anyone as a result of your call, they will always examine the Certificate to establish its authenticity and, that they are the person entitled to use it. I have attached a training handout, prepared by Debie Pearmain our police Licensing Officer. You may find it interesting and make it easier to say ‘go away please’.

NEXT SOMETHING STOLEN IN MAIDENHEAD, BUT COULD BE SEEN BEING SOLD ANYWHERE:

Hi there Jeff,

Would you be kind enough to mention this in your next email:

A beautiful clay Owl Finial dating from the 1800’s, was stolen from the roof of Bovilles Art Shop in Maidenhead High Street, between the 19th and 22nd of October.
The thief clearly scaled the roof from the back of the building, all the way to the front, leaving debris from the theft behind.

The owl was made locally, using clay from the Pinkneys Green Brick Kiln, so aside from being beautiful, it has real local heritage value.

I’ve attached a picture of the finial.  If anyone has seen it anywhere, PLEASE can they call TVP quoting Crime Report Number LC4143165/12

Thanks so much for your help,

Marie

NEXT a note from Tiny Welford re Bonfire night on Monday

If kids have fireworks – they may start early !

It’s that time of year when Bonfire night is approaching. While this is a fun time for the majority of people, as always, a small minority can sometimes behave irresponsibly and spoil it for the rest of us. There is also sometimes an increase in Anti-Social Behaviour.

This year, as always, the Neighbourhood Teams along with the RBWM Community wardens and other Partners from across the area, will be out in force with dedicated patrols in the lead up and on the actual night, tackling robustly, anyone acting in an anti-social manor.

As with Halloween, please let us know on the 101 number if you see groups of youths gathering, acting suspiciously or throwing fireworks.

For reference, please find below some useful information regarding fireworks:

  • It is illegal to let off any firework in a public space and this carries a fine of up to £5000. Police may also issue an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice.

  • It is illegal to set of fireworks between 11pm and 7am (Bonfire night extended until 12 midnight)

  • The Police have the power to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying fireworks.

  • All fireworks sold to public must comply to British Standard BS 7114

  • It is illegal for a member of the public to possess a ‘display’ style firework (category 4 fireworks, can only be used by professionals)

  • It is illegal to cause unnecessary suffering to animals with fireworks.

  • It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18 years of age. Anyone selling fireworks to someone aged under 18 can be fined up to £5,000.

  • All licensed or registered retailers must operate from a fixed premises, so any fireworks being sold from market stalls, car boot sales or other temporary sales locations are illegal.

  • Only a very small number of people are licensed to sell fireworks from their home address. If you are offered fireworks at a residential address contact Consumer Direct immediately on 08454 04 05 06.

Anyone with any information regarding the illegal sale / use of fireworks, is urged to contact the Police on 101 or use Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 to pass information anonymously.  Similarly, if you see any groups of youths acting in an anti-social way, please notify us so we can take immediate action. There may well be a police presence only a few minutes away that can act immediately – the more you call the more we can target our resources.

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

First unsolicited texts re PPI ! We must all be getting them – it seems every 5 minutes !

Hi Jeff,
On the subject of PPI - today's call, was a recorded message from a well spoken lady - on behalf of a number of banks, including Barclays. Quote - "press 2 to receive your refund ...press 9 to remove yourself from our database". Naturally I simply hung up. Pressing 9 would be very tempting for some I suspect, (although why would I be on their database) but would also, probably, connect you to a premium telephone line with the inevitable consequences. If in doubt - just hang up !

Keep up the good work

Martin

I agree absolutely with Martin.  These are automated messages, sent by a computer to generated phone numbers. By pressing anything, you show that you are a live number !!!

Next a new phone number blocking system, which I don’t have, unfortunately !

Hi Jeff,

I recently bought a new inexpensive home telephone. It has a function key, that bars unwanted calls.
If I don't recognise the number showing on the caller display, I wait till it stops ringing and then look it up the on the web.  99% of the time, it's a nuisance number, so I bar it.
Whenever this number tries to call me again, they get a busy tone and eventually give up !

It doesn't ring at my end at all, so that's the first and last call, I'll ever get from that number. It is so simple!

No asking people who they are or trying to catch them out, in fact, no interaction whatsoever with them. I had three regular nuisance calls a day, before I bought the phone. I just ignored them, when I recognised the number on the caller display. It wasn't a hardship to me.

UNSOLICITED SECURITY CALLS FROM CREDIT CARDS:

Hi Jeff,

Several years ago, I had an automated call from Barclaycard, and was asked for my security details.  I declined to give them and instead, called the number on my card.  As it turned out, the original call was legit. It is a bad system, but was actually not a con. I still wouldn't trust it though, and would always make the call myself.

Katie

I agree – everyone knows the questions that would be asked – what a thief does not know, are the answers – you would give them to them !!! Always make a call of your own, to a phone number on your card, or paperwork.

A QUESTION OF IDENTITY THEFT – the option is not to not TO DO NOTHING, but get it sorted asap.

Hi Jeff,

I wish to inform you of what has happened to me today.

I received in the post two statements of accounts, from well known 'on line stores'. I had no dealings, in my name with either.  The two accounts showed a £nil balance and included a pack of vouchers.  My initial thoughts, were that sending vouchers, was merely a new way of getting a me to purchase something and they could therefore be binned, without any further action.

I then decided to ring up Trading Standards to complain about this way of getting people to buy, (now 'Consumer Direct' 08454040506 ).

They advised me that this was in fact, a case of 'identity theft'. They suggested I speak to the stores that sent the statements.

I then rang the 'on line stores' and they immediately transferred me, to their fraud dept.  They were very helpful and barred the accounts. They have also now put my details on ‘CIFAS’, so that any further request for credit from any source will in future have to be verified by me first.

I would like to mention that I had registered with Credit Expert Monitoring Service (Experian 0800 656 9000) some time ago, but I had been lax in doing weekly checks for any such fraud against me, otherwise I would have noticed the new store accounts appearing !

I may be helpful to let others know that you cannot simply ignore what you think is 'junk mail' and you may need to investigate further.

Many thanks

XXXX

Really good advice – trading Standards would always be your first port of call !

NEXT AN AMUSING SCENARIO – BUT THE BIKE WAS STOLEN !

Hi Jeff,
Some years back our daughter purchased an extra strong ‘U’ / ‘D’ lock for her bicycle. She then secured her bike to a "no waiting" sign in Brighton.  The thieves were not put out at all ! They bent the sign round and lifted the bike over the top of the pole !
Not so long ago I advised a lad not to use a similar sign, to secure his bike.
