Crime: 30 January 2013

As you will see below, we have had a slight increase in the number of shed breaks across the area.  It is that time of year.  I have put this message out to Windsor, but it applies equally to Maidenhead !

30/1  Wednesday midnight / 6.20 a.m.  Montagu Road, Datchet.  Offenders have removed a fence panel to access a garden and broken into a shed, by forcing off the lock.  The shed alarm sounded and they immediately made off !  The shed break handout is attached again at the bottom of this message as it contains details of recommended very reasonably priced shed and padlock alarms, for expensive items stored inside.

Just another point.  We have a ‘Tracker’ bike that we deploy in areas where bikes are being stolen.  It did cost a lot of money, 5 or 6 years ago.  New products have now come onto the market, at much more reasonable prices that would be easily affordable, if you have an expensive bike.  I am considering purchasing one, to back up our trap bike in initiatives.  In the past we have tended not to let the bike run to its final destination, in case we lose it and have had to be content with the thief.  At just under £100, we would be able to risk losing the bike, in order to find out who the handlers are and where the bikes end up !A Spybike, www.integratedtrackers.com/GPSTrack/Spybike.jsp

If you do have a valuable bike, this would be a reasonably priced option and works in exactly the same way as IPAd and phone tracking systems, monitored from your computer.

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

I have received emails from people receiving the virus message – ‘I am crying as I write this message.....’  We haven’t had many of these for about a year, but they are beginning to circulate again.  It is a virus which infects someone’s computer.  It then sends this message to everyone in their email address book.  It is successful, because you receive a pleading email from someone you know.  They need to clear out the virus and change all their passwords !

As you know – as the police - we cannot recommend individual products, unless they are ACPO approved.  Geoff though, thought you may be interested in this one.

Hi Jeff

I thought you might be interested in this self-monitoring car tracker DIY, with no annual fee. Works with a PAYG SIM card. I saw this in a classic car club magazine.

I would like to add, I have no interest in the company.

Hi Jeff,

If the Hong Kong/Chinese scam letters are all paper, then they should be recycled (after being torn up) and not binned.
At least that way they are doing some good!.

Steve

I absolutely agree !

NOTTINGHAM KNOCKERS !

Hi Jeff

Last Saturday Hurley was targeted by some ‘Nottingham Knockers’. I saw a man selling dish cloths etc from a sports bag to my neighbour and called the non-emergency crime number 101 to report him. He was white, in his late teens, dressed in dark sportswear with a red baseball cap and red trainers – quite distinctive. The police told me that someone in Mill Lane in the village, had also phoned this in, but with a different description. Within ten minutes a police car was in the village looking for him and as we were talking, we saw the man and the policeman went to talk to him.

I run the village online group ‘Hurley Online’. I receive your community messaging emails and I forward the bits relating to Hurley and Burchetts Green, to the members. (I know you’d prefer them to have the bigger picture, but I feel they need to sign up to your messaging to get this – I just pass on the local info.).

I’d like to put a message out to the members from you explaining a bit what Nottingham Knockers are – I think I remember you saying something before about them looking for opportunities to come back and break into a property?  If you pay with new banknotes, saying neighbours are away etc?  Do they keep the money themselves or is there a ringmaster?  Do they pass information on to criminals about vulnerable people/opportunities for crime?

All this would have more gravitas coming from you and raise awareness.  I think some people may just think they are pretty harmless, you tell them to go away and they do. But it could be more than that?

Many thanks,

Susannah

I am grateful to Susannah for forwarding my messages to her members – we do want them spread as far and wide as possible.  To help her, I forwarded the handout I had produced re Nottingham Knockers – which I have attached again at the bottom of this message.

Please remember our mantra:

‘I do not buy goods and services at the door – thank you’ Then, firmly but politely close the door and phone the police on the 101 number.  As you can see from Susannah’s message – we always respond !

FINALLY:

Hi Jeff,

i reported yesterday to the non emergency number that someone had entered our shed, found nothing, but left a bit of a mess.  I wasn’t sure if it should be on the message, as there was nothing taken, but I know there has been a few break-ins our area, so thought people might want to know.

Thanks.

Lorna

Just to reassure everyone.  As far as I am concerned, a break in, is a break in.  If someone has climbed over a gate / fence and broken in.  An offence has occurred – whether or not they steal anything and everyone in the area, needs to be aware and take extra precautions.  This leads me onto another point – many people simply do not report an incident like this – because nothing was stolen and what could the police do anyway ?  There is lots we can do – yours may have been part of a series and shows us the route taken by a particular offender – that alone, can identify someone.  Please remember the jigsaw principal.  We need all the pieces to fit the puzzle together !!!
