STILL NO BURGLARY DWELLING ACROSS MAIDENHEAD !

For the first time in weeks, I have had some burglaries to report in Windsor.  Can everyone be on their guard and keep phoning suspicious things through to us.  With one of the burglaries in Wraysbury, a Neighbour saw a suspicious van outside a neighbour’s house and took a photo on her mobile phone – Brilliant !  Just what we needed.  It is really that simple.  If you see anything suspicious, use your phone to take a photo – but be discrete and do not put yourself at risk – be making a call !  If you see in one of these messages, that something has happened which may be connected – email it to me !  Please also keep details / photos of those flatbeds coming in - please !!!  Leaflet deliveries which don’t look quite right should also be reported on the 101 number.

People walking up and down driveways looking into windows – kids walking along parked cars trying car door handles are an immediate 999 call.

Helpline for victims of hate crime

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead now has a 24/7 independent call centre for victims of hate crime – anything that is motivated by hostility towards someone because of their age, disability, race, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Stop Hate Crime UK on 0800 138 1625 offers callers the chance to talk about the problem with someone who has the time to listen, offer support and put victims in touch with the right people or agencies who can help.  Residents can also visit the website at http://www.stophateuk.org/

Serious hate crimes should always be reported to the police on 999 but the Stop Hate UK service may be of great benefit to victims of less serious crimes who are often reluctant to call the police or the council for help.

NEXT – STOLEN BIKES !

A bike was stolen in Ascot last night.  Offenders climbed over a 6’ locked gate, to steal an expensive racing bike, which was in a bike canopy, but – INSECURE.  If you have a bike – and particularly if it cost more than say £500, can you please go online to:

https://www.bikeregister.com/

asap and register your bikes – all of them please – it is free !  We can access the site securely, if we see a known offender on a bike he could obviously not afford !  Please do it today !

To coincide with the TVP re-launch of Country Watch, PC Howard Rose and PCSO Liz Davidson have organised an event where TVP will be represented at the Berkshire College of Agriculture open weekend on the 27th and 28th April, in Burchett’s Green, Maidenhead.  It is expected that over 14,000 people will visit the event over the weekend.

This will be a great opportunity for the Maidenhead West Neighbourhood Team, to get local residents signed up on the spot to TVP alerts and Country Watch, using the new remote wireless ‘Alert Portal’ they will have with them.

Maidenhead West is a predominantly a rural area, with lots of farms and rural businesses, scattered around the outlying districts.  By setting up a TVP Mobile Police Point at the event, it is hoped that TVP can raise the awareness of rural crime and those initiatives that TVP have launched, to combat this problem.

The Neighbourhood Team have arranged for the PCSO mascots, PCSO Proud and PCSO Respect to be present, to engage with the younger visitors to the event.

Additionally, the LPA Volunteer Police Cadets will be on site, helping to run the event and raising their profile at the same time.

We hope to see everyone there.  Please come up and introduce yourself to us.

MEMBERS COMMENTS:

First a perfect response from one of our members to the delivery scam:

Hello Jeff,

My mother who lives in Eton Wick, today was victim of the packages with mobile phones scam. They arrived today in the name if my father and then someone rang, to say that they had been delivered to the wrong person and they would be coming to collect them.  They told her that it contained mobile phones and that they were calling from Parcel Force.

She called Parcel Force to verify this.  They said that it sounded like a scam.  My mother then rang the police.  The police advised her it was more than likely a scam, so she left a note for them on the door, to say the packages were at Maidenhead police if they wanted to collect them and that no-one, would answer the door.

What I want to know is- why do they do this scam? & if the police are aware they will be at the house soon, can they not catch them out?

Thanks
Megan

Many thanks Megan, your mother did all the right things.  To answer your questions, this is Internet fraud, and it is very difficult to say where the offence takes place and which jurisdiction will be appropriate as far as the police are concerned.  Why do they do it ?  They get free expensive new phones !  They have not paid for them with their own credit cards, but a cloned card.  I have advised Megan to get her father to check his credit / debit cards asap.  Many traders online, will only send goods to the home address where the credit card is registered.  That is why they have to arrange to collect them !  It is a neat scam and if they do it hundreds / perhaps thousands of times, the hit rate will be excellent and very profitable.

Everyone must spread this message as far and wide as they can, to protect those, without access to the Alert System.  Please get everyone you know to sign up !  It is the only way they can be protected from scams such as these !  They simply have to go online at:

www.thamesvalleyalert.co.uk

It is very simple to register !

ANOTHER SCAM:

Hi Jeff,

I experienced a telephone scam on Tues 23rd April.  I phoned my doctors surgery from my landline, to make an appointment and a message came over the line, stating that all appointments needed to be booked on another number.

I rang that number, the phone was answered and an automated voice told me, I was in a queue.

The phone continued to ring and the voice continued to tell me I was in a queue.

I was on the line for ages, with no answer and gave up.  Later, I tried many times from my mobile, with the same response.

Eventually I went to the Doctors Surgery the next day, as I could not get through.  I explained how annoying it was that I hadn't been able to get through to make an appointment and was told that they had not changed their number !
I spent ages trying to contact BT, who told me my line was safe.  They added that as I had dialled the number, the cost was my responsibility and I would have to pay for the call (Cost = 5p per minute + call charge on the landline). The call as far as I know was nearly £5 !

Vodaphone were more helpful and said the call was a scam, but the calls still came to £10 as the number was premium rate.

I don't know how the phone line was intercepted and have informed the surgery, who acted immediately.

I'm a student nurse and not flush with funds.  I would hate anyone else in the same financial situation, to be stung.

Abigail
