Crime:
31 July 2013
MRS.
CHALMERS, our crime Reduction Advisor,
has put together a training package / tool kit re ‘Rural
Crime’ which is a priority of the new PCC. The
Neighbourhood Teams are undergoing full training at the moment – the
first day was yesterday and I have to say it was excellent. The
training provided by ‘Data Tag’ and the ‘CESAR’ Marking system for
large machinery, was superb ! Some of the handouts may be useful to
anyone living in a ‘rural area’ or who has outbuildings / stables,
large mechanical equipment, extensive gardens / grounds etc. I felt
it may be useful for you to have sight of the handouts. I have
therefore attached them. Have a quick read through. If you
feel they may be useful to you in the future, please copy them to your
hard drives for future reference.

NO CRIME TO REPORT.
From the Borough:
Libraries lending a hand to reduce
burglaries
With the school summer holidays in full
swing, the Royal Borough’s Community Safety Team has
once again joined forces with the library team and is hosting a series of
burglary prevention events across borough libraries.
The latest series of Road Shows kick off on Thursday
1 August at Ascot Durning Library between 10.30am
and 12noon.
At the events residents will be able to drop
in and meet their local community wardens while face painting and
colouring activities are being provided for children.
Dates of future events:
- Tuesday
6 August,
1.30 to 3 p.m. Cox Green Library, Maidenhead
- Thursday
8 August,
10.30 a.m. to 12 noon, Dedworth Library
- Tuesday
27 August,
1.30 to 3p.m. Windsor Library, Windsor.
Also available at the Road Shows will be a
range of information leaflets with crime reduction advice and hints and
tips for keeping homes safer. There will also be examples of locks, alarms
and garden security devices.
Thames Valley Police
have the following summer crime reduction advice:
- Ensure
that windows and doors are closed and locked when you are out. Don’t
leave small windows open believing them to be safe
- If you
want to leave windows open while you sleep, fit window restrictors so
they cannot be fully opened, or make sure they are not large enough to
allow access to a burglar
- When out
in your garden ensure that windows and doors to the front of the house
are secure. It only takes a second for someone to get into your home
and take things without you noticing
- Do not
leave valuables on display in front of windows or in reach of open
windows or doors
- Ensure
that all barbecue and garden equipment and tools are securely locked
up in a shed and out of sight. Tools can be used by the potential
offender to break in to your home
- Consider
fitting outside security lighting or a visible alarm to help deter
burglars. Even using pea shingle or gravel on a driveway and spiky
plants in garden beds can help
- Don’t
leave any keys near entry points where they can be ‘fished’ or
‘hooked’ out through the window, letter box or cat flap
- Ensure
any internal handle operated
locks on UPVC doors are fully secured with a key.

Cllr Carwyn Cox,
Cabinet Member with responsibility for Community Safety, said: “It can
be very tempting to leave windows and doors open during hot weather but we
know that burglars are opportunistic. I would urge residents to come along
to the Road Shows as it could prevent a crime. Burglary affects people’s
property but far worse are the psychological effects.”
Cllr Eileen Quick,
Cabinet Member for Leisure and Libraries, said: “Our libraries are very
popular and well used throughout the summer holidays with many events
taking place to keep children entertained. I am sure the burglary Road
Shows and face painting will get many visitors.
“There is a long tradition of libraries and
community safety co-hosting events. It presents a great opportunity for
the community safety team to promote their key messages to a wide range of
people.”
