Flatbeds driving around looking for scrap:
Inside the police stations lots of officers have now been given specific responsibility for certain issues.  Mrs. Chalmers for example, is now the Force Lead on Rural Crime.  That means she advises the whole Thames Valley.  We are very fortunate to have her as our local CRA – Crime Reduction Advisor – she is so knowledgeable and always willing to share her expertise.  PC Kris Lovell who is a Neighbourhood Officer for Boyn Hill, Cox Green and Woodlands Park, is now the SPOC (Single Point Of Contact – not SPOOK) for all ‘metal thefts’.  This does not mean that if you have metal stolen you report it to him – you still do that in the usual way through the PEC on the 101 number.  It just means he examines every report we receive to look for patters, repeat offenders etc.  This ties in nicely with our ‘JUST IN CASE’ campaign.  If you see flatbeds driving slowly around your area and you believe them to be ‘acting suspiciously’ or possibly going to steal metal items from driveways /gardens, please phone the PEC with details of date, time, location, direction of travel, index, make and type of van, colour, any writing on the side, phone numbers etc and descriptions of driver / passengers etc.  If you happen to have your mobile with you and it can take photos, please photograph the vehicle – particularly the index as sometimes these are swapped over !  We can match flatbeds to all the indexes being used.  If you do this – please be discrete and do not put yourself at risk.  You want to pretend you are making a call !  Please then email them to me and I will forward them to Kris, Local CID, our Intelligence Teams and the RBWM Community Wardens.

Just to add, EVERYONE collecting scrap metal needs an EA licence.

We had a success this week with recovered bikes.  After my messages about stolen bikes, keeping serial numbers etc, a man came into the police station here at Windsor with his grandson.  The lad’s bike had been stolen several months ago in Dedworth and he was desperate to get it back, so they came into Windsor, to look at the bikes in the back yard (phone the PEC and ask to be put in contact with your local property officer, they can make an appointment for you to come in and look at them all).  They looked along the row of bikes and there it was !  It had only been recovered few days before, so someone had been riding around on it since it was stolen.  BUT – he did get it back !  Full descriptions and Frame Numbers please !!
Someone asked what happens to recovered bikes if we cannot trace an owner.  They are all placed on the BumbleBee Auction Website:

6/8 – 7/8  Tuesday 7 p.m. / Wednesday 4.50 p.m.  Shepherd’s Close, Hurley.  Garage break.  Locks removed.  Unknown if anything stolen.  Several other garages attacked – none reported so far.
7/8  Wednesday 1 p.m.  Sheepcote Lane.  Attempted Burglary.  The owner was home and heard the doorbell ring twice.  She decided not to answer. Shortly afterwards she heard a banging on the front door as someone tried to force it.  She tapped on a window and they immediately made off.  There were possibly 2 involved.  One is described as possibly Asian, mid 20s.  The first thing a potential opportunist thief will do, is ring your doorbell to see if you are home.  If you answer, they will come up with a plausible excuse and leave.  If you don’t answer, they may attempt to break in, thinking no-one is home.  SO – the advice is – if you hear your doorbell, but do want to answer for any reason – it may be late – make sure they know, someone is home and decided not to answer.  Turn up a radio, or turn on some lights !  They will simply leave.  If you do get one of these calls, where someone rings the bell and when you answer, has an inane question – let us know immediately on the 101 number – a neighbour may well be out !!!
