Crime: 20 November 2013

A GOOD 48 HOURS:

NO BURGLARY DWELLINGS

There was a break in at the College of Agriculture, Burchetts Green last night, but I have no details as yet.

FIRST - FROSTY MORNINGS ! - PC Steve Baggaley, the Neighbourhood Officer for Old Windsor has just been to see me.  While out on early morning patrol, he has been walking past driveways and houses where cars have been left running to warm up.  We all like to get into a nice warm car to go to work, or drop the kids off at school, but owners are taking an enormous risk.  Most are left with the keys in the ignition and unlocked.  Can I add – you may not do this on the highway – that is an offence – ‘Quitting’ !

NEXT THE FAKE TVs – Redline have let Mrs. Chalmers – our Crime Reduction Advisor - know that they have now sold over 20 of them to people from this area – Please make use of the discount scheme – available up to Christmas.  You purchase the Fake TV and then enter the discount code on the pay screen.  That is 20 houses more protected and less vulnerable to burglary, whilst their owners are out, let alone those purchased from Amazon and other sources.  If you have purchased one of these – from whatever source – can you let me have some feedback on the product and whether seeing it in operation, you feel more secure.  If so, we will roll it out across the entire Thames Valley, as best practice.

If you missed how to get one, the Fake TV is now available from various retailers at various prices, ranging from £10 - £30, depending upon what you want it to do and members should check those out – just put ‘Fake TV’ into a Google search.  The full price on Redline is £27.50 (this is the version with the dusk sensor and 4 / 7 hour setting).

For Redline Securities - Click here

Redline offer a £5 discount, if you use the following discount code FTV2013.   Redline will honour this discount until 31st December, which is about 6 weeks.  You enter the discount code at the bottom of the payment page.

FEEDBACK SO FAR:
Hi Jeff,
I purchased a fake TV for my new house this week, and trialled it a couple of days ago. It did the job, and I can actually say, I thought the TV was on.

I purchased the cheaper model, which doesn’t come on automatically at dusk, so I used a timer to turn it on and off.  I can then set it for whatever time I want.

It is a brilliant piece of kit !

KIDS AFTER SCHOOL / COMMUTERS RIDING BIKES IN DARK CLOTHING WITHOUT LIGHTS:

We are approaching the schools across the Borough if this is a problem in your area.  If you have children / grand children, can you make sure their bikes have proper lights and they wear something reflective when it is dark.

This is a note I have received from Imogen Lloyd at the borough re Windsor Boys School.  If it is a problem where you live, just let me know.

Hi Jeff

Just to let you know that I have contacted the school through a teacher contact that I have at the school.  She has forwarded my email to the Deputy Head, who will get a message out to the boys in Assembly.

They have recently done a ‘Bike Safe Assembly’, so it is something that is on their agenda.

I will follow it up in a week or so, to see if there has been any change.

We were hoping to do an ‘Enforcement Evening’, where we issue ‘warnings’ and fines for those that are still not complying.  For example if a cyclist is prepared to turn up a local police station within 7 days with their bike and a proof of purchase of a new set of lights, then the fine is waived.

Kind regards

Imogen

BIKES WITH LITTLE OR NO LIGHTS AND RIDERS IN DARK CLOTHING:

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for forwarding the Bike awareness leaflet.

As a keen cyclist (and motorist), I'm very keen to see more cyclists ride responsibly by displaying effective front and rear lights during hours of darkness.
Many cyclists in Maidenhead wear dark clothes and no lights when out in the dark, and little enforcement is evident. Motorists are unfairly being asked to be alert to (and are responsible for) black cats hidden in coal sheds, as well as all the "normal" hazards encountered on the road.
Regards,
Ed.
Thanks Ed.  I see from a recent article in an Oxford paper, that in half an hour they stopped 171 cyclists for not having lights and charged a total of £8,500 in fines !!!

We do have a problem at the moment with school kids riding to and from school with little or no lighting on their bikes.  Obviously the kids are in dark clothing – school blazers.  Can I ask all parents out there to make sure your child / grand child is responsibly and suitably dressed for the highway – for their own safety ?  If this is a problem in your area, please let us know and we will go to the school to issue advice.  We cannot issue tickets or fines to anyone under the age of 18, but must hope that good sense prevails.

ADULT CYCLISTS !!!!

Hi Jeff,
Cyclists who dress totally in black – especially at night – just ask for trouble. Whilst there is no legislation at present to compel cyclists to wear hi-viz bands or waistcoats, it is something that the police could encourage ?  A couple of nights ago emerging from Onslow Road into the Chobham Road, I nearly had a cyclist under my front wheels. He was dressed all in black, riding flat out with his head down, and when I spotted his LED light, I had already pulled out in his path.  The shaking fist can be no substitute for visibility !!

Adults should be setting an example !!

UNWANTED PHONE CALLS:
Hi Jeff
We have had so many nuisance calls that we have put an answer phone message on our machine, stating that we no longer answer the phone because of them, but we will check periodically, so please leave a message.
This saves having to have any contact as they always hang up immediately.  Incidentally I don’t know why bone fide people don't automatically leave a message, you have already paid for the call and it is a courtesy.
Regards
Anne

Hi Jeff
On 15/11 at 15.32 I had "a problem with your computer"  - the Windows Scam - type scam call. Needless to say I didn't fall for it !
However, unusually for these type calls a number came up on my caller display :- 017607484126, I tried to ring back but got message that the number had not be recognised !  This info might not be of any use, but I thought I would pass it on.
Regards
Lesley

NEXT THE VIRUS EMAILS YOU RECEIVE FROM SOMEONE YOU KNOW – I AM IN X COUNTRY AND WE HAVE LOST ALL OUR MONEY

This one was slightly different in the destination:
Dear Jeffrey,

I received this e-mail, which I am assuming is some kind of spam/fraud. I'm a little concerned at the personalised nature of this e-mail.
Smita
Hello,
I am sorry for reaching you rather too late due to the situation of things right now.My family and I had a trip visiting Kharkov Ukraine, everything was going on fine until last night when we got attacked by some unknown gunmen. All our money, phones and credit cards was stolen away including some valuable items, It was a terrible experience but the good thing is that they didn't hurt anyone or made away with our passports.
Usually these come from a remote island destination where communication / banks are a problem
Our regular message receivers know this has been going on for years now.  This message means that the sender has a virus, which sends this message to everyone in their Outlook contact list.  They need to run a virus scan and change all their passwords !
