FLOOD INFORMATION FROM THE BOROUGH:
Updated 11am Tuesday 11 February

Severe Flood Warnings in the Royal Borough

The Environment Agency has issued a number of Severe Flood Warnings for stretches of the Thames.

The EA tell us that river levels remain stable today (Tuesday) but more rain is forecast.

Councillors and Borough staff are liaising with local residents and providing support wherever necessary. Keep a check on the latest information at the Environment Agency website.

More than 30,000 sandbags have been delivered by the council so far - over 5,000 more will be distributed today
If you know of any vulnerable people needing assistance call the Council's customer contact centre on 01628 683800 or the out-of-hours number 01753 853817.

The council's customer contact centre is now open daily from 7am to 7pm to assist residents with flooding issues. Call 01628 683800.

The council will continue to have officers out across the borough 24/7 to monitor water levels and assist residents where necessary.

Road travel
The large number of road closures because of flooding is inevitably impacting on traffic in other parts of the Royal Borough, especially at peak times. This is exacerbated by the disruption to public transport. If you are travelling by road please expect delays and plan your journey accordingly.

Parking
Residents whose normal parking permit arrangements have been interrupted by flooding can use their parking permits in any Royal Borough parking bay (apart from designated residents' bays) and any Council car park.

Public transport
First bus services locally are suffering disruption. For further information go to www.firstgroup.com/maidenhead
or follow First on Twitter @firstberkshire and @route190
First Great Western are advising people not to travel to London Paddington unless absolutely necessary as services are disrupted because of flooding at Maidenhead. Live information at www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk

Libraries
Datchet Library will be closed on Tuesday.
Wraysbury Container Library will not be on site on Wednesday.
All other libraries are due to open as normal. If anything changes then updates will be posted here.

Some useful websites
Flood water may be contaminated with sewage and animal or other waste and so may contain harmful bacteria or chemicals. However the risk of illness is low because of dilution in the high volume of water. A number of agencies have advice on their websites:
Flood debris
If you haven't done so already, contact your insurers for information about making a claim and disposing of any flood-damaged items.

Sandbags
If you have been provided with sandbags the Council recommends that after the flood threat has passed, you retain them for future use. However, if you don't have a place to store them, please open the bags and put the contents on your garden.

Contact the Council
You can contact the Council on 01628 683800 or if you are calling outside normal opening hours please call 01753 853517.

We had another Courier Scam case in Maidenhead yesterday !  The first here for 11 days.

The aggrieved received a call at 1.45 p.m. from PC Peter Mead from the Met Pol.  He stated that he had someone in custody for the use of her credit card in Earls Court.  Her accounts had been compromised and £700.91 had been withdrawn.  During the afternoon, they had numerous calls as he gained her trust.

He asked her to keep the line free and not to take calls from anyone else, nor make any, in case he needed to contact her urgently.

He asked for her card details and then asked her to pump her PIN number, into the phone – which she did.  He then asked her to cut the card in 2, put it in an envelope, which he would arrange to be collected.  A taxi arrived and she handed over the envelope with the cards inside.

A little while later, a friend arrived and after some discussion, they called the police.  The cards were properly cancelled and fortunately, as they acted quickly, only £490.90 had been removed from her account.

IT IS STILL HAPPENING EVERY DAY, SOMEWHERE IN THE THAMES VALLEY.

There was another Courier Fraud in Banbury, over the last few days !  £34,000 taken from the aggrieved's account.
This was a development of the Scam.  A police officer phoned the aggrieved and told her there had been illegal use of her card.

Then came the new twist:

They informed her, that the police had set up a separate and secure No.2 account for her, at her bank.  Would she please transfer her savings into that account, to protect them.  She did as requested and transferred £34,000.  As soon as she had done so, a man waiting for the transfer into the account, immediately transferred it out !

ONCE AGAIN – PLEASE DO NOT LET IT BE YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW !

A WARNING ABOUT THE COURT DATE SCAM WHICH INSTALLS MALWARE ON YOUR COMPUTER - WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF EXAMPLES OF THIS PARTICULAR SCAM IN RBWM:

Fraudsters have been sending out legitimate looking spoofed emails, designed to trick recipients into installing malware.

The emails – which look very real - say you have been notified and scheduled to appear for a court hearing – often, the High Court in London. It contains specific dates, times, locations and reference numbers.

It asks you to download a copy of the “court notice” which is the ‘attachment’. The downloadable.zip file actually contains an .exe file (an .exe file does something, when clicked) in this case it contains a virus.

The email has no conection to the Criminal Justice System and anyone receiving the email, should not download any attachments, nor click any links, but report it to us by using our online fraud reporting tool.

You are likely to see some variations of this scam email, as it is easy for fraudsters, to amend the details and continue targeting people.  Cyber security specialists say “the email is difficult to block, as the subject headers change frequently.”

They also said: “Provoking a panicked, impulse reaction, has become a very common scam technique for cyber criminals”. Opening the attachment, allows the criminal, to spy on the victim; to use their computer, to commit crime, or steal personal and financial information.

MEMBERS’ ADVICE:

RE SCAM CALLS:
Hi Jeff

May I make a suggestion for our members re scam calls ?

Ask anyone making a bogus / scam call for the ‘password’.  We will know there isn’t one, but they won’t.  Whether they purport to call from a bank (‘fraud on the account’) or from the police (‘there has been fraud on the account’) or even from an IT company (‘there is a problem with your computer) – we may have set a personal password !!!

There does not have to be an actual password, the caller only has to think that there is a password and he/she can’t give the password.

The person being called could then just say that without the password, they cannot continue the call and put the phone down.

Josephine

Sounds like excellent advice to me – let’s scam the scammers !!!!

STOLEN SAT NAVs

I HAVE JUST HAD THIS IN FROM AL:

Hi Jeff,

I have discovered just today that a GPS (navigation device – a SAT NAV) can be blocked if it is stolen, so that Live Services, can no longer be used.  This would make them useless, once stolen.

We were in Spain, when our SAT NAV was stolen.  When I got back, I sent an email to TomTom, to ask if the device could be blocked – as it had been stolen - to which they responded YES !

However, a police report is required, for them to do this.

This came as a surprise, and not knowing this, we did not bother to get one from the Spanish authorities.

I do not know if Garmin and the other major manufacturers will also block a stolen device, though this might be worth investigating.

I thought I would let you know. If this were widely known to the general public, it would make the theft of SAT NAVs much less attractive (and their purchase on the black market likewise suspect). At the very least, the slighted party, has the satisfaction of knowing that the device won't be used by the miscreant, his associates, or be a party to stolen merchandise.

Sincerely
Al

Thanks Al, I will check this out – if it is true – we will publicise it widely.  If it is true, why don’t we all already know this, to reduce the crime involved !!!
