Call just in to the police (1.40 p.m.) that we have lads in Dedworth, Windsor, putting leaflets through doors – ‘Cash for Gold’.  If they appear in your area - Please just bin the leaflets and do not respond.

Thanks Ken !

Another COURIER FRAUD over the weekend.  Our PCSOs and RBWM Community Wardens are out there talking to everyone they can see.  We are visiting the post offices, shops, doctor’s surgeries, hospitals, daycentres etc wherever anyone over 60 may visit, to spread the word.  If you read the case from Old Windsor on this sheet, we must ask, how anyone in the Borough is not aware of this scenario by now ?  You may fall for the first few minutes of the call as they do panic you, but after that some similarities will start to dawn ???

PLEASE CONTINUE TO SPREAD THIS AS FAR AND WIDE AS POSSIBLE.  THE DISRUPTION, AND SOMETIMES DESPAIR CAUSED BY THE LOSS OF LIFE SAVINGS CAN BE DEVASTATING AND YOU DON’T WANT THAT HAPPENING TO ANYONE YOU KNOW !

PLEASE HELP THEM.

1/3  Saturday 7.30 p.m.  Mills Spur.  COURIER FRAUD.  The Aggrieved received a call – apparently – from the Apple Store in the Westfield Shopping Centre, ‘Stratford’.  The caller said they had 2 men in the store that had tried to use her credit card.  They had now been taken away by the police.  She was given a crime reference number and policeman’s shoulder number.  Could she phone her bank – immediately – to cancel her cards.  She did this, but could not get through.  She immediately got another call from the Apple Store to give her the full names of the 2 men taken away.  Please phone the bank immediately.  This time she dialled the number on the back of her card – and got straight through !  The ‘bank’ said there were several large transactions just going through on the card.  If she gave them all the details, they would cancel the cards and the entries.  They would need the cards to be taken to a police station asap.  They asked her – what other credit cards do you have ?  She gave them full details of all her cards.  He said he would take her through a PIN blocking procedure – all she had to do was pump in her PIN number on the phone followed by the hash key – which she did.  They then asked her to phone the police immediately on the 101 number.  Again she did this immediately, getting through to the MET Police.  They went through it all again – taking time – she was then asked to cut the cards in half, wrap them in a kitchen towel and place them in an envelope with her initials on the front.  He also gave her 3 security questions to ask the Courier, just to make sure he was genuine !  If he did not give the correct answers, she was not to hand over the cards.  A courier would be sent to collect them within a few minutes.  The courier arrived, answered the questions correctly and she handed over the cards.  The ‘policeman’ stayed on the line until the courier arrived.  He then told her not to use her landline or check internet banking as it would hamper the investigation.  Later she began to think this was all a bit odd and phoned the police on her mobile You know the rest.

SECONDLY SECURING UVPC FRONT DOORS !
We have had a series of burglaries in the Cox Green area on the 28th February – 5 in all – mostly through UVPC doors using the letterbox method.  Sometimes this is fishing for keys from a hallway table.  These seem to be the other method – specific to UVPC – a long wire, shaped like a shepherd’s crook is pushed through the letterbox.  It is also bent around, so that it can catch on the handle and pull it down – thus opening the door.  IF THE DOOR IS DOUBLE LOCKED, THIS CANNOT HAPPEN !  END OF PROBLEM !  Please think about this every time you leave your house.  If you are burgled using this method, the crime report will show UNKNOWN MEANS OF ENTRY  - which means, no force / damage, was used to break in.  The inference being – you left your house UNLOCKED / INSECURE – the result:

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Hello Jeff,

I have just taken such a "BT call" from an Asian gentleman, who appeared to be the same as in Jan's message in your email of 28 February. He said that he is getting messages saying that our PC has viruses which was causing a slowdown in the BT Broadband service.

He then said he could clean this up to provide a faster speed. He asked me to turn on my computer and at this point I asked him who he was and where he was calling from.  There was a short delay and he answered without giving his name.  He was calling from a support network working in conjunction with BT Openworld, Virgin and Talk Talk.

I said we had no issues with our PC and at this point I just hung up.

Regards

Mike

Well done Mike – we must all do the same !
