COURIER FRAUD

NO COURIER FRAUDS SO FAR THIS WEEK.

WELL DONE EVERYONE.

I have now had two cases where people have realised that the phone call from the police is a scam and told them what they can do with their call !!!

Hi Jeff

I have received alerts for a few years now. When news of the scams come through, I always inform my 83 year old mother in law.
On Sunday, she told me that she had received call from a London police station. The caller informed her someone had used her card and he gave her instructions on what to do.
She told the caller that they could call Windsor Police Station and give the information to them.

I was impressed with the action she took.

Thanks for the important information.

Pat

The other case was in Burnham Close, Windsor.  The owner received a call from someone calling himself ‘Eaba Khan’ – PERHAPS ANOTHER SILLY NAME LIKE THE LAST ONE‘Imad Ickhead’, which shows their absolute contempt for the victims !  He said there had been some illegal use of credit cards and money removed from the owner’s accounts.  He then asked for bank account and credit card details.  The owner immediately put the phone down on him.

EXACTLY THE RIGHT THING TO DO.  The scammers have not given up and are still making the calls, looking to fool, vulnerable victims.

I have just been speaking to the officer that attended this incident, who reports that this person was a repeat victim !  Fortunately, he was fully compus mentis, he did not fall for it the time before either.  It does mean, that the list they are using is being circulated amongst several groups, operating this scam.  It is highly unlikely the same group would target a victim a second time – who would fall for it twice ?

KEEP SPREADING THE WORD.

I have received this advice from PC Christopher Glewis, who is on one of our ‘Shift Response Teams’ – those police officers who respond to and attend calls made to the police:

Please can you let everyone know that there is a group of white men that may be touting for business, or claiming that their motor vehicles have broken down and they need assistance.

We suspect the males who may be from ‘outside the area’ may be targeting the NORDEN ROAD area of Maidenhead.

Residents should, under no circumstances, allow these men into their homes. They should also be very wary of offering assistance of any kind, as it may be a hoax.

Many thanks

PC 5210 Christopher Glewis
Shift Response Team 1
Maidenhead

Many thanks Chris – Can everyone be aware – that we have ‘people from outside the area’ parked up in the Norden Road area.

MEMBERS’ ADVICE:

Some good advice from Ant:
Hi Jeff trust you are well?

One of our NW members forwarded this, I think a great idea in light if the suspicious cars hanging around Windsor of late.

Regards
Ant

‘In America, a stranger approached an 8 year old boy and asked him to go with him.  The man told him that something had happened to his mother and she had sent him, to pick boy up.

The boy asked the stranger, for THE PASSWORD !

He used the man’s confusion to move away.

He and his Mum had agreed a family password, in case she ever had to send someone to collect him.

SO SIMPLE – SO EASY – SO SAFE !

TPS – The ‘TELEPHONE PREFERENCE SERVICE’ operated by BT – IS FREE
I had this in from Marcia:

Hi Jeff
I just had an interesting phone call from "Unknownnumber.co.uk"

He explained that the TPS can now only stop 14% of cold calls (none from abroad), and that ‘UnknownNumber’ offer to remove your number from all databases for a year, for £24.99 - which just covers their costs.

He explained that, since they had phoned me and I had not contacted them, there was a "special offer" element, whereby there would be a £5 discount and the length of time would go out to fifteen months.

If you get one of these calls, put down the receiver.  TPS is very effect – and – it’s FREE

SALES CALLS FROM GREEN ENERGY COMPANIES:
Dear Jeff,

I have been on holiday and was surprised to get 5 calls already today, from the so called green energy people

The first 2, were for solar power, and getting me to confirm an appointment for this week.

I told them that I had made no such appointment.  I did not want such an appointment and told them to take me off their list, etc..

They rang back later and said that as I was having trouble keeping the Wed appointment, they had moved it to Thursday.  I repeated that I didn't want same, take my number off their list etc.

They rang again and moved it to Tuesday.  I went through the same responses, once again.

The next to call was from "MEGA WATT", offering Green Energy Savings, same style of approach.  They wanted me to confirm my appointment for this week. I tried a different approach.  I collected their details.
His name was Robbie and gave me a phone number.  I rang 101 and reported this, including the fact that these callers won't go off the line when told to and continue to argue.

Now after lunch, I have had Jessica, from "My Planet" confirming my appointment for this week !
When I said that I had never heard of them, never spoken to them, did not want to speak to them, she just said ‘Well, see you on Tuesday’ !

I told her, she will not come, and if she did, I would call the Police, because I felt this was harassment.

I was then told, I had to ring and cancel on a phone number she gave me.  I explained that I wouldn’t be doing that, because I had made no appointment, so I couldn't cancel it.

I got another call, I think from "Green Energy", but the line was bad and they rang off, before getting into their patter

I have had such calls before, all either side of lunch time, but never 5 in one day (so far!). These callers are much more persistent than previously and the tactic of "confirm your appointment" (that you have never made), is a new one to me!

I hope this helps build a picture of current nuisance calls.

They claim to be Govt funded companies, but there has been nothing in the press about getting "free electricity" and there's no such thing as a free lunch, so why free electricity?

Cameron

Many thanks Cameron.  Cameron was well able to deal with this harassment, but we have elderly and vulnerable residents, who would not be !  If you have someone in your road that you feel is vulnerable, make contact and offer to help if this happens.  You have to be strong and we need to protect those, less strong than ourselves.
