NO BURGLARIES ACROSS THE ENTIRE RBWM IN THE LAST 24 HOURS !

I put out burglaries at a Cricket Club and a Scout Hut in Maidenhead yesterday, which may be connected.  A fire extinguisher had been used to obliterate any forensic evidence.  This morning, I received this message sent by my colleague, Christine Seal who covers Wokingham and Sonning - just over the border.  They have had a Scout Hut broken into !

Christine Seal (Police, NHW & Community Messaging Co-ordinator, Wokingham LPA)

 Pound Lane, Sonning

11/13th July

At sometime between Friday and Sunday someone has gained entry to the scout hut by forcing the door at the back.  Searched inside but nothing stolen.

Garages and sheds are often full of expensive tools to steal - or used to break into your house. Don’t leave a garage or garden shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house.

  • Fit strong padlocks and hardware to shed and garage doors.
  • Make sure that the doors are solid enough not to be kicked in.
  • Fit locks or bars to windows.
  • Lock ladders inside your garage or shed.
  • Consider lockable steel boxes or anchor posts fitted to the floor to secure tools and equipment.
  • Garden tools and machinery should be permanently marked with your postcode.
  • Install a battery or mains-powered shed alarm, available from all good DIY stores at a reasonable price.
  • For extra security, replace the screws in external hinges of your shed or garage side-door with 'clutch-head' screws (also known as 'anti-tamper' or 'coffin' screws).
  • Secure your wheelie bin to stop an intruder using it to climb on.
It seems we all sing from the same hymn sheet !

Hi Jeff.
An older chap called today, to ask whether I wanted to buy any teak furniture, left over from Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows.  He walked around the surrounding houses in the village.  He was apparently driving an old truck (which I didn't see).

I just hope he wasn't doing a recce , to find houses that are empty during the day !

As you say forewarned ...............

Lynette

Many thanks Lynette, I went to Hampton Court Flower Show and have no idea what teak furniture ‘could be left over’ !  Did he visit anyone else ?  Did you get the index of his van ???  Did anyone report him to the police on the 101 number ????????????

WINDOWS SCAM – NEW VARIATION:
Hi Jeff,

Just thought I’d let you know that the “Windows” scammers have a slightly new angle that might fool the unwary.

They no longer claim to be from the “World Wide Web technical department” or the “Windows helpdesk”, but now say that they are from "BT internet support".

If you have a BT hub (as I do), this might just fool you into thinking that the call is real.  BEWARE!!

Alan

You have to be on your toes with these people.  NO-ONE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR SYSTEM REMOTELY.  EVERY CALL OF THIS NATURE IS A SCAM.

PC Pete Bullett, from Ascot, has sent me the latest Trading Standards Bulletin from Surrey.  This part is really useful as we may get these scams soon !

Rogue Traders & Scams
Addlestone resident fell foul to the Microsoft scam - they received an unsolicited telephone call saying that Microsoft had passed them details, access was then granted to the PC, and the resident baffled by what they saw on the screen and ended up parting with money and possibly compromised personal information. If you receive a call like this we suggest you simply hang up!

An Elderly resident has been defrauded of approximately £100,000 - his entire life savings. He was duped by telephone into investing in 'oil shares and a pink diamond'. The police are investigating and safeguarding procedures initiated.

Scam emails offering an employment and tourism opportunity have been reported. All they want is a copy of your passport, address and telephone number!

Elderly Bookham resident was cold called a while ago and agreed to gutter repairs. Since then further work has been carried out at inflated prices. No paperwork was given by the trader and we only found our about it due to a family member asking for advice about it - moral of the story - look out for friends, neighbours and family!

Charity bags - Guildford resident was concerned about whether the latest one through the door was legitimate. You can check to see if a charity is legitimate via the Charity Commission CLICK HERE
