Crime: 18 July 2014

ANOTHER REALLY GOOD END TO THE WEEK !

ONLY ONE CRIME TO REPORT

NO BURGLARIES OF HOUSES

AND

NO CAR CRIME !

Can I ask for help ?  Yesterday, a young police officer came to see me.  An elderly resident – 83 years old - in Dedworth, Windsor had phoned the police, because she was being plagued with unwanted telephone calls and she wanted them to stop.  While talking to her, it quickly became apparent, there was more to it.

She had received a letter to say that she had won £100,000 on the American Lottery.  would she please phone a certain number, to discuss the payout arrangements.  She now freely admits she acted out of greed.  She knew she hadn’t entered, but she fell for it.  She phoned the number in the letter.  The man who answered, explained that there were certain admin fees, to enable the cash transfer to take place.  The fees - £2,000 !  She transferred the money.  Then she got another call – everything was proceeding normally, but she would have to stump up the customs fees, which would of course be refundable, when the money was transferred.  That would be £4,500.  She explained, she did not have as much as that.  She only had £4,000.  That would do............So she transferred £4,000.  She hasn’t received a penny yet, but is getting more and more harassing calls, asking for money.

She emphasised that her family must not be informed, under any circumstances.  They would not understand and would probably want to put her into a home, or have a Power of Attorney signed, so that it could not happen again.  She knew she had been foolish, but still wanted to live independently – no-one was to be told.  She would not have reported it to us at all, but she wanted the calls to stop.

This was tragic, but is happening more and more, as criminals move from traditional crime, to fraud.  Can you please alert any elderly / vulnerable neighbours / friends / relatives / work colleagues you may have.  If we have had one case reported to us, there is no saying how many others, have been targeted.  We know from your reports that these letters go out by the thousand.

I have been working with Paul Westgate from Home Instead, who has produced some really good handouts, covering this specific issue – which I have attached.  Please read them and pass them, to anyone who you feel would find them useful – and – get them to sign up to the Alert system !  They can simply go online and register at:

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

First - the PEC received a call reporting Nottingham Knockers on the 101 number:

Hi Jeff

One of your members receives her daily email from you and was very excited to call in to report Nottingham Knockers  !!  She said the emails you send are very well written and informative and thought I would pass on the positive comments to you!

Thank you
Police Enquiry Centre,
Thames Valley Police

Thank you Mrs. B.  The system works and I am so pleased, people are now feeling confident enough to use the 101 number.

The reason we send this information out via the Alert system has multiple purposes.  Making you aware of current crimes and crime trends, is to make you safe and prevent you from becoming a victim of those crimes.

It is also about information sharing – which is a two way street.

We live in a world of diminishing resources and we cannot do this alone.  We work with and are very grateful for, the input from our Statutory Partners, especially the Borough and the RBWM Community Wardens, who all do an excellent job, but we need your help as well, to direct those limited resources.  We produce patrol plans and direct resources using predictive analysis, crime patterns and crime over the last 24 hours.  BUT – just because there was a burglary in X area last night, does not mean there will be another in that same area, tonight.  You may not believe that your phone calls, are as valuable as they are.  We know most of our prolific offenders.  A phone call from you, with even a vague description, may well identify one of those.  You may have just seen a lad / 2 lads, hanging about acting in a suspicious manner, but not doing anything overtly criminal.  To us, with even a minimal description, may mean X & Y, known prolific burglars, or car crime thieves.  We can then deploy our resources wisely and economically.  If those 2 are in a particular area, that is where the crime is going to take place !

Always remember, you have a vital role to play.

Firstly to do all you can to protect your own property.  That means locking doors and windows at night and not leaving cars INSECURE on driveways.  You saw from yesterday’s message about the 2 lads convicted for dozens of burglary offences.  They specialised in simply trying rear house doors and walking in.  Look at the message above - if you remove all the INSECURE cars and houses from the crime reports, we would see an immediate reduction in crime of at least 20% – 30%.  That of course means 20% - 30% less victims of crime and frees up resources, for us to deal with other things.  HELP US TO HELP YOU – IF YOU SEE ANYTHING YOU FEEL IS SUSPICIOUS – DIAL 101.
