Crime: 21 July 2014

NO BURGLARIES

AND

NO CARS BROKEN INTO !

I have just trawled through the police Computers for July, looking at Frauds across TVP.  The list was very disturbing.

As I have been saying – our traditional ‘opportunist crime’burglaries and car crime - has reduced drastically, as penalties increase and proceeds decrease – who would buy a second hand laptop from a man in a pub now, when a new one is so cheap and easily available.  Fraud is on the rise.

Frauds reported to Action Fraud in July so far across the Thames Valley,:
1/7  Aylesbury.  2 men turned up saying that they were working over the road and could see that the aggrieved’s guttering needed replacing.  2 days later they appeared and started to remove all the guttering.  Fortunately she didn’t give them any money and the police were called, but there is a lot of damage to repair
3/7  Earley.  A woman knocked at the door of an elderly resident saying she lived over the road and had locked herself out.  Could she come in and use the phone ?  She then asked for money to get to her mother, who had a spare set of keys.
7/7  Reading.  Chap knocked at the door of a resident to say that he was there to check the guarantee on insulation work that had been done.  He was shown all over the house and left !
9/7  Bray  Courier Fraud – She was on TVP Alert and did not fall, but called the police.
10/7  Old Windsor.  An elderly resident was approached by a man ‘working next door’ to do some handyman work.  He started to clear a garden shed and put up trellis.  She paid him £520.  She has since written out 6 further cheques, but no work has been done.  He now calls back each week for a cheque.
10/7  Banbury – Courier Fraud.  £7,500 taken.
10/7  Eton – Courier Fraud.  £5,000 possibly taken.
11/7  Little Bourton.  Forged cheques £750,000 - £800,000.
11/7  Tilehurst – Courier Fraud - PC Charlie Mitchell  £10,000 taken.
15/7  Aylesbury.  Two men knocked at a house offering to clear guttering for £20.  The aggrieved paid up front, as she thought it was reasonable.  They then asked for another £20 – not yet having done any work – as there was more to do than they thought.  She paid the additional £20.  They then returned to say the guttering and fascias needed replacing and that would cost £250 and they wanted paying up front, so that they could buy materials.  She said no, but they tried to pressurise her into going to a cash till, to get the money.  To get rid of them, she agreed to go with them the following morning and they then left saying they would be back at 9 a.m..  The resident’s daughter phoned the police when she heard about this.
14/7  Bodicote, Oxfordshire – Courier Fraud - PC Charlie Mitchell.  The woman went to her bank to transfer £8,000, but the bank refused and called the police.
16/7  AylesburyCourier Fraud - PC Charlie Mitchell –.  £7,800 taken.
17/7  Haddenham, BucksCourier Fraud – PC Charlie Mitchell.  Though the victim handed over all their credit card details, they became suspicious when cash was mentioned and put down the phone.

As criminals move away from traditional crime to Fraud – we will see more and more of this.  As part of what we do in NHW, can everyone keep an eye on any elderly / vulnerable neighbours ???  let them know how these frauds work and offer to assist them if anyone calls on the phone or at the door.

AND:
If any of you are approached by a man in a car asking for cash for petrol, who then offers his gold ring as security – walk away.  This scam has been going for years.

I have a report from Harmondsworth.  The person rightly called the police, who carried out an ‘Area Search’ for the man.  He was located and questioned.  He had a lot of cheap jewellery on him, as well as a large amounts of cash !  He had obviously been quite successful.
