A LOT OF GREEN ON MY MESSAGE TODAY

NO HOUSE BURGLARIES IN THE LAST 48 HOURS

AND

NO CARS BROKEN INTO !!!

Following on from my message yesterday about the Courier Fraud in Dedworth, there have now been two more attempts – fortunately, both unsuccessful.  I have set out the circumstances of the one in Cookham in some detail for you, so that you can see how the whole scam works and exactly what they ask you to do and how long they keep up the pretence !!!  I have also had this in from Dave:

Hi Jeff,
I thought you might be interested in a call I have just had.

The person on the line said they were at Hammersmith Police Station.  They said they had someone in custody who had used my bank card.  He then gave me a number to ring, which he said was the police station.

I did not ring the number, but before I rang off, I told him I was the ‘queen of the fairies’ !

I hope this e-mail is of some use to you
Dave

As I said yesterday, if one call is reported to us, there will be others.  Dave is in the Alert database and receives messages, so knows all about it.  There will be many others who are not, who are unaware, this is a scam.  We must warn everyone we know, this has started up again.  This is possibly the third one – we know about – this week !

A WARNING ABOUT 3 BREAK-INS TO SCHOOLS LAST NIGHT.
Fortunately, I have all our local schools, registered to receive Alert messages.  I have 3 reports of break-ins to schools in Maidenhead last night.  All are believed to be connected.  The thieves were after safes and cash.
Can all local schools beef up their security for the next few weeks and make sure there are no large sums of cash on the premesis, which could make them a target.  Alarms, as well as any CCTV systems, must be checked, to make sure they are turned on and working perfectly.  All school buildings must be checked and fully secured at night.

7/10  Tuesday 1.30 p.m.  Wakelins End, CookhamAttempted Courier Fraud.  The aggrieved received a phone call at about 1.30 p.m. from ‘DCI Freeman at Scotland Yard’.  He explained there might be a problem with their bank account and fraud was suspected.  He maintained that money had been taken from the account and asked for full account details.  DCI Freeman, asked them to go to their building society and transfer all their savings into their VISA account.  They were to tell the building society staff if asked, that they needed the money for a birthday – which happened to be the next day – a fact he appeared to know, but they may have given dates of birth in the preliminary discussions.  They were asked for their mobile phone number, so that they could keep in touch while they were doing this.  They went to the building society who handed them £2,000 cash over the counter.  They received a call from DCI Freeman asking them to go to Thomsons and purchase £5,000 worth of Euros on their VISA card.  They did this, but their card was declined 5 times.  They then went back to the building society, who checked the card and confirmed it was fine.  They then received yet another call from DCI Freeman.  He instructed them to go to a mobile phone shop and buy an incar charger for her phone along with as many iPHONE 6s as they would sell her.  They tried to do this, but the mobile phone shop in Maidenhead did not have any of either products.  Another company could supply the phones, but only on contract.  They thought about this, but thought it was not what the DCI had asked for.  On the way home, the mobile phone battery gave out, but DCI Freeman phoned on their land line.  When they explained what had happened, he asked them to go to London !  When they said this was not possible, he suggested Reading.  He directed her to the Oracle and said he would phone her again, once she had arrived there, with more instructions.  He also asked what they were wearing, so that he could follow them on the CCTV there.

It was only at this point, they phoned their son and explained what had been going on.  He immediately explained to them it was a scam and the police were called.

NO MONEY HAD BEEN LOST – FORTUNATELY.  I have included a lot of detail, so that you can see how determined these scammers are and how the entire scam pans out – it is a very long and involved process.

We must all remember, they are very plausible and have an excuse / reason – which seems to make sense at the time – for everything, they ask you to do.

MAY I ALSO ADD – WE – THE POLICE – WOULD NEVER ASK ANYONE, TO DO ANYTHING LIKE THIS !

6/10  Monday 2 a.m.  Station Hill, Cookham.  Shop break-in.  Offenders smashed the glass in the front door to open the lock.  This failed so they forced the locks.  The property was searched but could not locate anything of value – the till had been left open but had no float.  Two bottles of wine were stolen from a cooler.  They even dropped and smashed one of these as they made off towards the cooking college.
6/10  Monday 2.30 a.m.  Pub, Littlefield Green.  Offenders entered via a forced first floor window, which activated the alarm.  Very...a large number of expensive bottles of champagne were stolen.
5/10 – 6/10  Sunday 0.30 a.m. Monday 8.15 a.m.  Lyndhurst Avenue.  Shed break.  Padlock removed.  Wolf Compressor, and Clarke generator stolen.
8/10  Wednesday 3.40 a.m.  School, High Road, Cookham.  Offenders forced a window and door, then propped it open with a safe !  Staff lockers have been searched

8/10  Wednesday 1.45 a.m.  School, Oaken Grove.  Offenders have attempted unsuccessfully to smash the glass in a fire door.  They then forced the door open into the main hall and then another door, into the kitchen area.  They searched the office and stole the safe.  Have they forced this open and discarded it somewhere ?

NEW POWERS TO TACKLE ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
On 20 October 2014, Parts two - six of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, come into effect.
They will streamline the powers available to deal with anti-social behaviour by reducing them from 19 powers, to six. These are more flexible and will enable the police, local authorities and others, to respond quickly and effectively, to Anti-Social Behaviour.
The Act puts the victims first, gives more power to local people and enables professionals, to find the best solutions for their local area.

As the relevant date draws near, I will circulate the relevant paperwork, to keep you abreast of the changes and legislation.  NHW is involved with trying to reduce ASB and of course, build ‘Community Cohesion’.

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

SPAM !
Hi Jeff

Maybe people new to your excellent tips, might like to know about ‘Google's Gmail’. I have run this email programme for many years and it is excellent, at dealing with SPAM.

The rubbish goes straight to Trash and gets deleted automatically after 30 days.  It's very, very rare for SPAM to appear in my In Box.

And of course it's free.  This is their link.

Nick contacted us last week to let us know about emails from supermarkets which are SCAMS:

Hi Jeff
Reference the mail I sent you last week re the Tesco scam, I am still receiving them, as many as 5 a day.
But now the same format email has come from Argos, again with a survey attachment
I have spoken to Argos and they have assured me that like Tesco they DO NOT use American company to collect surveys. Also this latest mail is exactly the same spelling and wording as the Tesco one.
DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT
Nick

Scam emails from Facebook !

Hi Jeff,

Hi not a specific local issue, but I have had at least 2 emails pretending to be from Facebook.

They are disguised as ‘facebookadministration’ and ‘Facebooknotification’. The actual email addresses though, are not Facebook !

Needless to say, I did not click on the link, but thought people may like to know and be on their guard.

AND FROM VANESSSA:

Hi Jeff
I am an avid reader of your invaluable emails and am really grateful for the work you put into telling us all the new ways we are being targeted by the criminal fraternity.

Just thought I would share a potential malware mail I have received.  It is a really convincing looking message from Facebook, saying that all my personal messages in my Facebook account would be deleted, unless I did something about it – ‘please click here’ etc. etc..

I was warned by my antivirus provider that it is malware, You might want to circulate it as I've not seen this one before.

Best regards and thanks again.

Vanessa
