Crime: 24 October 2014

If you look in Maidenhead South today, you will see a real spike in car crime.  Someone is obviously out there in the early hours up to no good.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO REPORT ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS – PARTICULARLY IN THE EARLY HOURS TO US, ON THE 101 NUMBER.

I have also attached a fraud poster and a tri fold leaflet.  The poster is A3, but I am having them printed in both A4 and A5.  If you have a notice board, or connected to a doctors surgery, day centre or any other publicly accessible building, could you please ask if they could put one up ?  We can only get to so many people – we need everyone to see one of these all the time, to remind them.  I can also supply the tri fold leaflets.  Just email me at my police email to say how many you need.

We have with the help of the RBWM Community wardens been to every bank / building society & post office in RBWM to update them with our current frauds and ask them to be really aware if say anyone over 60 goes in and without notice asks to withdraw large amounts of cash – particularly if this would be unusual practice for them.

Not only do we have to be on the alert for Courier Frauds, but also cases of bogus builders !

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Earlier this year we had some discussion re drones used in residential areas.  It proved to be rather controversial with both supporters and opponents.

I have now received this from Ron:

Good morning Jeff,

You may recall my quest earlier in the summer for information about the legality of flying drones.

In my case the drone was in Walker Road and apart from the serious safety implications, it invaded my privacy.  Well, I finally managed to get an answer, which may be of interest to you and fellow members and I have copied and pasted it below.

It has quite far reaching implications; for example, drones cannot be legally flown above public areas such as the Rugby grounds and Braywick Park, if folk are about; even walking their pooch or visiting a grave.

The information comes from the BBC NEWS channel on Google and if you have a spare minute, you may wish to “Google” it and look at some of the pictures etc.

Drones and the law

Unless CAA permission has been granted the pilot cannot:

  • Fly over or within 150m (492 ft) of a congested area
  • Fly over or within 150m (492 ft) of an organized open-air assembly of more than 1,000 persons
  • Fly within 50m (164 ft) of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft
  • Fly within 50m (164 ft) of any person

I do hope that you find this helpful
Best wishes Ron

Various Scams

From George:

Hi Jeff,
In response to Nick's email.
On Hotmail, these scam emails can be marked as ‘Phishing Scams’ then Hotmail can stop them being sent to other people. You should not receive the same email again.

Regards
George

From Dave – the newer type of scam email:

It merely says - your online banking has been suspended for security reasons – please ‘log in’ here for further instructions.

YOU WILL WANT TO LOG IN TO SEE WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT
THAT IS THE POINT OF IT

RESIST THE TEMPTATION
Paypal:
Caroline received an email from Paypal telling her that her account had been suspended and that they believed a 3rd party had attempted to gain access – could she please click on the link to verify all her account details.

Needless to say she didn’t, but that is exactly what my sister had done before her bank accounts were cleared out !

DO NOT BE PANICKED INTO DOING ANYTHING HASTY !

‘Tescos’:
Hi Jeff,

I have no idea if this is a scam, but it's suspicious.

I am getting loads of emails saying ‘Tesco’ will pay me £150.00 for customer feedback.  A brief look - and it seemed just a few innocuous questions, but then they want some bank details so they can pay me.

I just delete them as its not worth the risk.

Stephen
EXACTLY !

Next another new scam phone call – has anyone else had one of these ??

Hi Jeff
I had a message last week from a named estate agent on my answer machine. He claimed to be from a well known local estate agent.  He referenced me by name and knew my house number.

I have had no contact with any estate agent whatsoever and am neither buying or selling a property: I have since contacted them twice, but had no response.

Is anyone aware of any scam of this nature?

Chris

Euor millions !

Finally from Roger:

Hi Jeff,

Hi Jeff,
I just had a text, telling me to text the word ‘OK’ back to this number.  If I do that, I will receive 5 free entries to the euro millions on Friday.

It obviously is a scam, as I have never used my phone to do the lottery, plus they are not going to give away free entries are they !

I just thought I would give a warning, as some people may fall for it.
Regards

Jackie

Thanks Jackie – we have been alerted !

Hi Jeff,
This afternoon a van arrived selling fish knocked on my door.  This is obviously a very professional organisation.

Are they still required to get a ‘Pedlars Certificate’ to do this ?

Regards
Roger

There are several exceptions, to having to obtain a Pedlars Certificate.  These include selling food and books !  Why books, we have no idea, the reasons are historical.  Even our books of certificates which we issue, are dated from the 1890s !
