Crime: 21 November 2014

A VERY GOOD END TO THE WEEK !

NO BURGLARIES

AND

NO CARS BROKEN INTO.

Several prolific offenders have been arrested and remanded.

This Operation involved a huge amount of time, effort, intelligence gathering and work from several police teams, including Local CID, Neighbourhoods, Shift Response and Intelligence departments, all of whom worked closely with similar cross border teams, as these offenders transgressed prolifically all over the place, ignoring police boundaries.  They were ‘of interest’ in several Counties.

We can only do this with your support.  That little jigsaw puzzle piece that you supply, fits the whole thing together.  You don’t know exactly what it is you have seen, nor how it fits into the bigger picture, but a sighting of a person, in a particular location – we can often recognise exactly who they are from a minimal description – at a particular time, ties our researches together.  Keep phoning suspicious things through to us. You may not see an immediate result, this operation took several months and meticulous planning.  Before we can go to the courts for warrants, every ‘i’ must be dotted and ‘t’, crossed.

House searches, involving several police areas all perfectly timed, recovered an amount of stolen property.  I may well be circulating pictures as a result, of property we cannot identify as stolen from our police records.

Hopefully this will make us all safer for a while.  We must all still be alert to suspicious people hanging about and using the 101 phone line to let us know – nature abhors a vacuum – their place will surely be filled.

This case from Windsor may re-enforce this message:

19/11 – 20/11  Wednesday 6 p.m. / Thursday 7.30 a.m.  Harcourt Road.  Garage break.  The door may have been LEFT INSECURE – Wetcutter stolen.  There had been a suspicious incident that day.  When the aggrieved arrived home, he found a man on his driveway.  He said in a middle European accent, that he was looking for a particular address, he then quickly left.  The man was in his late 30s and was driving an old Audi.  THIS IS EXACTLY THE SORT OF SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT THAT SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE POLICE.  We only hear about these things afterwards, when doing house to house enquiries.  What if that man was looking for potential crime targets in that road ???  Whatever he was doing, it was suspicious and should have been reported to us on the 101 number – even though he had done nothing and at that time, no crime had occurred.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY:

MEMBERS’ COMMENTS:

Hi Jeff,

As I have already received three ‘scam’ telephone calls this morning, I thought I would contact you to report in.

The first two had withheld their own numbers, but the third one, which clearly came from a long way away, identified himself with a name and said he was from the ‘IT Computer department of …..’ at which point I said ‘No thank you’ and put the telephone down.

When I dialled 1471 I did get a number, albeit a very odd one – 005065.  I have not tried to ring it, but I thought you might be able to make something of it, with all your clever tracing software.

I guessed it might have been the scam when they pretend to be ringing from Microsoft, but I cut him off before he had a chance to tell me.

Regards
Mandy
Thanks many, we do have some very clever software to trace calls if we need to.  In these cases the number you get is always fake.  The calls are all international and this is their way to get you to answer and bypass the BT phones that block international calls.  As these scam calls are generated abroad, international law is in play, and virtually nothing can be done !

LADIES HANDBAGS AND BEING ‘AWARE’ !

I put out the case of the purse on the passenger seat with the map and another where a woman was unloading her car after visiting a supermarket – when she came back out or a second load, her handbag which had been left on the passenger seat was gone.  We have also had several cases of handbags going from shopping trolleys in supermarkets.  These offenders are ‘feral’.  They can spot someone who is distracted / unaware / not paying attention to their surroundings and they exploit it.  Unfortunately, some of us are potential victims.  We don’t give out the right signals that say we are aware of who is behind us, who is watching us etc.  We appear to be in a dream state, thinking about 10 other things that we feel are important.  A feral offender, spots these people at a distance and then targets them.  They will not target someone who appears to be alert and aware of their surroundings.  How many times in a day do you have to say ‘sorry’ to someone, because you were inadvertently in their way ????  You hadn’t noticed them beside or behind you when you moved.  That should not be you !

Hi Jeff,

Just a quick note regarding the incident in the supermarket car park – two things that struck me instantly were:

1. Never put your handbag inside the car with you ! The number of women who do this, never ceases to amaze me.  I ALWAYS put my handbag in the boot, even if I’m going to be needing it again in 5 mins.  There, it is safely locked away and, more importantly, out of sight.

2. Always lock the car doors as soon as you get into the car, no matter where you are, or what time of day it is. The car I have now actually does this for me, as soon as it begins to move, but if I’m not driving away immediately, I lock them myself - AS SOON as I’ve closed the door.

Perhaps you could pass these suggestions on to your other members, as either one of these simple steps, would have prevented this theft from occurring.

Keep up the good work!

Alex

Well – what sensible advice – I could not have put it better, myself !

Have a good weekend everyone.
