ADVICE AND SCAMS:
Dear Neighbours

I am sure you are all receiving the messages from TVP, but I just wanted to mention that I was very interested to read a message that arrived yesterday.

One mid week evening, around 4.30pm in late November, I noticed a very smart looking silver Mercedes cruising up and down the road and I felt that it was ‘unusual activity’. I went outside to see if I could track where the car was heading and was stopped by a neighbour, who was just driving out of the road and had also noticed the car, which had pulled up beside my high fence; just in front of the entrance to her drive. She said that she had asked the driver if he needed any help and he said that he was just waiting for the people in no. 8. I went back inside the house. About 10 mins later, I walked outside again, to check if the car had moved, but it hadn't, it was just parked outside my high fence and had made no attempt to drive towards no. 8. There was no-one around - so I took a photo of the car with my phone and came back inside the house, rang the police and reported the activity and the car. Unfortunately the index no did not show up in the photo as it was quite dark.

The car then drove past my house again, leaving our road. I was relieved. It returned again, about 15 minutes later, to take another cruise up our road and I immediately went outside and took another photo and made my presence very visible. The car then drove away and I didn't see it return.

Between us and my attention to the vehicle and driver, I hope we have put him off returning here, but after reading the Ringmaster message, I feel sure this particular vehicle and person's intentions, were questionable.

I have passed this information on to Det Con Beever as requested in the Ringmaster.

However, I urge you all to continue to be vigilant about any unusual activity you happen to notice in our road, even if it is in a very smart car, with very "unlikely" looking people. Please report any unusual activity to the Police on the 101 number. I believe that our attention to such activity, does make a difference as to whether we are a target for these criminals, or we are overlooked and such criminals move on to another less guarded location because there are too many people paying attention in our street.

Thanks for your continued support and watching out for each other.

Joan

This is word for word, exactly the right advice and what we encourage everyone to do. Please rely on your instincts. If the car had just parked up innocently and the driver’s intention was to visit someone, you would not have noticed it. For some reason, the attention of local residents was drawn to it. It was probably parked too far one way or another, or the driver’s body language did not match the intention of visiting someone, he may have been looking round furtively. Our eyes and brains watch for minute signals, we generally don’t notice consciously – we just feel, something isn’t right. Our instincts are generally correct – learn to rely on them and act ! If you see something and you feel it is ‘odd’, phone us on the 101 number – say you know it may be nothing but……Please remember the jigsaw principal. You may have the missing piece of a puzzle. The car may have been parked up prior to a job, or perhaps afterwards, until any police activity calmed down. You never know !

NEXT:
Hi Jeff,

Last Wednesday at about 5.20 in the morning, my husband was getting up for work when he noticed 2 people, a girl and a man, going up people's driveways and trying the doors of cars and looking inside. They did this completely along one side of the road and then came down our side. As they reached our driveway, our light came on and my husband made a noise with our blinds, making them run off.

I have warned some of our neighbours but l thought l would inform you.

Yours.

Can I just say, in this circumstance I would have phoned 999 immediately. If they had found a car door open, they would have been inside and stolen anything left inside. We keep banging on about not leaving your car unlocked. This is why ! It happens every day. Please don’t let yourself become a victim of crime quite so easily, when it is so simple to prevent – lock the car !  As you can see above - it does happen !

Finally – Please don’t fall for this one !!

Happy new year to you all

I have just taken a call from a lady who feels that she is being ripped off, by a security magazine.
They called her by phone in Aug and she agreed to advertise in their magazine. She made one payment of £110, thinking it was a one off payment. She has never seen a copy of their magazine.

Just before Christmas, someone from the magazine phoned her again and asked for another £110. She became suspicious and has not made any further payment. She has described to me, some rather unusual sales tactics they used to try and get her to make the payment, suggesting that their proceeds went to charity and would she be able to live with herself, if she didn’t pay !!!!

I have asked her to contact Trading Standards, so that they can look into the company and their sales techniques etc.

Has anyone else come across similar companies ?
Thank you
